Can I winter sow Salvia 'Clary Mix'? Or do I need a greenhouse?

Does anyone have any experience wintersowing this species? If you do when, and do you cover the seeds or not?

I think I've WSown this in the past - my computer crashed this past fall and I lost all my records, but I know I WSed some kind of clary sage mix. I think it was a mix called Claryssa. I did have success with it, and knowing the way I garden in general, I most likely did not cover the seeds - too much work for me! I probably sowed it around late February into March, since this is when I do my annuals, and I think this is an annual. Sorry I can't be more specific, but I really lost a lot when the computer crashed.

I've sown this, in March and April (hi dee!). The varieties I had were biennials, so they did not flower in the first year. If I remember correctly, I just pressed them into the soil lightly, so they were "covered", to an extent.

Are you talking to me or the OP? I don't own an ice pick and don't think it would be thick enough and very tedious to heat up plus if it's too small diameter, many more holes. Might be fine for vents though. Smaller holes, less fumes maybe. I like my woodburning tool, has just the right tip. Anyway, I found out yesterday some containers had iced on the bottom, moved them. So I will need to start burning a few holes low in the sides so they can drain if prolonged. Hadn't thought of that, been thawing in the daytime and freezing up again at night. Once all the snow is melted off and sidewalk clear, shouldn't be a problem unless it snows or ices again. Drain better on the sidewalk but have some still in snow. So thanks to whomever put me onto that. Whatever works for individual people is the way to go.

It really does depend on which salvia you have. Most of the blue and purple ones are perennial, because most of them come from Eastern Europe. Most of the red ones are more tropical, so it isn't that they are annuals, it's just that they can't tolerate freezing temperatures. There are exceptions, though, as salvia greggii comes in red and fuschia, and it is hardy, as is hot lips, which is red and white. And salvia guaranitica, which includes Black & Blue, can tolerate freezing but isn't hardy in colder zones. That said, my salvia coccinea does re-seed, as does salvia subrotunda. But if they sprout too early, the frost will kill them. Wintersowing provides a warmer environment, which might encourage them to sprout earlier than seeds that fall on the ground. To be safe, I would say do them with your annuals, or else plant some seeds now, and if the containers don't have any sprouts, add some seeds when it is a bit warmer. Hi and welcome to winter-sowing :) Perennials I start in December but Annuals and Veggies, I would follow what FAQS say above.(they helped me tons last year) If we have a bad Winter again this year, I'd reccommend actually not starting annuals/veggies till April or May as I lost a few Zinnias, Cosmos and tomatoes last year that I did in March!! As far as any advice for wintersowing the first time? Remember to put a few drainage holes in, stick with good potting soil(don't use seed starter soil or cheapest brand potting soil) and be generous but don't thickly sow seeds. I had better results meaning bigger seedlings where there were a few but not overcrowded containers. Oh and I'm sticking too the miracle-gro potting soil but that is just my recommendation. :) How many do you plan on doing? Any perennials? ~Michael P.S. It can become addicting once you start! Lol

Can I over-winter Black & Blue Salvia?

Heather I hope your plant did well in the basement. I dug up a rather large black and blue and put in the only available pot 12" I had. I covered it with a black bag and put it in my garage. I cut the stems way down to where it would all go inside the the black bag. I also am able to keep my garage in the 40s with an inwall heater but Im not sure that was necessary for it to survive which it did. I have left that plant in the same 12" pot all summer and it flowered mightily. I will do this again with it will put it in a larger pot. Thank you very much says the b & b. Also for those that dont know Im happy to report on my experiment of covering my entire garden with plastic and bagged mulch worked better than I hoped. It worked with 100% return on every single plant covered. As a note I had not had my agastache tutti frutti return in my zone 6 before I did this. I cut all the plants down to just a few inches above the crown so I could cover with the plastic. It is important to seal the edges as best you can with rocks, sheperds hooks , etc. Also it is important : before you cover make sure dormancy has started, that temps are consistantly in the 40s and lower. Higher than that and plants may try to grow again and this is not what you want. Steve

Hey PV! How goes it? See you made the transition over with the new site and format! Speaking of that, I see that ladyrose has thanked both of us for our comments, but I'm curious as to how you did that, ladyrose. Is there a "thank you" button I'm not seeing, or is it only possible to do that if one is the original poster? Just curious...
