Your system -- where do you store your supplies?
Comments (4)Hi --I know what you mean. I just bought some sturdy plastic shelves about 6' high and store everything on there--The key is going through at least once a year and organizing everything. I keep small items like epsom salts, etc. in glass jars with lids and everthing else in clear plastic containers so i can see what's in it. You can find these at any big box store. The key is being able to look up at the shelves and see everything without diggin in it. I also stapled chicken wire to the ceiling of my garage out of the walkways and use this to hang stuff with S hooks I bought at the hardware store, or just bent clothes hanger wire will work. Good luck....See Morewhat do you do with your walking/egyptian onions?
Comments (5)Use some now without removing the bulblets. I am thinking that Steve's heat issue is his rocky ground and location. Plus he might be thinking they are more like green onions and they are more like mature globe, no matter when you harvest. ANY part that grows above the ground is subject to regrowth. So be very careful what you through in the compost pile or along the garage. You will have walking onions in places you did not intend. For pickled cocktail onions I used the following recipe. It is for refrigerator style, but there are recipes on the net for water bath style. Use only the bulblets, they are more tender and small The globe parts are the onions I use to make my dill pickles. We make them by the gallon and everything is homegrown except salt and vinegar. Dill Pickles 6 c. water 2 c. vinegar 1/2 c. canning salt hand full walking onions, large ones split in half large bunch of fresh dill 2-4 garlic cloves, pealed Bring water, vinegar, salt to a boil. Layer washed cucumbers, onions, garlic and dill in 1 gallon jar. Pour hot solution into jar, completely covering cucumbers. Place lid on jar and let set on counter for 3-4 hours. Refrigerate until use, ready to eat in 2-4 days. Terry has a small frig in his tack room and 4 jars fit. We still have one jar left from last year and the pickles are still really pretty good. Comments (13)Ravmd, aren't you going to have an enviously large walkin pantry? :-) We have a tiny walkin pantry, and like susanilz5, keep potatoes, onions, and garlic in there, while fruit is in a bowl on the counter. (Fruit out of site, means out of mind, which means too much spoiled fruit.) Since the pantry is not on display, I don't find it necessary to get pricey storage containers for the veggies. Right now, while I have only temporary shelving in the pantry, they're in odd baskets I already had on hand. Eventually I want some baskets or other open weave type containers for onions and garlic that are the size and shape for the most efficient storage on the pantry shelves. We're keeping wheat berries and pet food in some wheeled containers I bought at Storables, so I think I'll also get one for potatoes. DH says he'll drill holes in it for me so there will be some air circulation. We'll have a row of these wheeled containers on the floor and will start our shelves above....See MoreShow me your fireplace! Where do you store your firewood?
Comments (4)Wood stash is around the corner through the mud room in the garage. But we bring it in by the arm loads for the basket. At the old house we needed a log rack and a big stash in the house as the old wood stove was so inefficient. This one is very efficient so the basket works well for us, even though we had designed the space for a larger wood pile....thus why we extended the stone around to the side wall....See MoreRelated Professionals
