New kitchen lights - regular cans with retrofIt LED kit or LED cans?

Frankly, I don't know what "LED cans" look like. Electrician suggested putting regular cans with retrofit LED kits.

I personilly don't like recessed lights to begin with for several reasons, especially because there is always a potential for leaking air/heat. But if they are being installed where there were none, shouldn't we put newer type cans designed specifically for LED lights?

Or maybe, it doesn't matter?

Please enlighten me.

To answer the question, we remodeled a few years ago and I did all Halo 6" cans in the kitchen, but fit them with a Cree CR6 LED trim. It seemed the most cost effective at the time and the most flexible going forward. I did not want to get stuck with a weird bulb base that I couldn't adapt to in the future. All retrofit stuff seems to have an edison (the screw type) base available.

But if all goes well, those Crees will last well into the 2030's, so I don't have to worry about it.

They look great, though and despite the fact that they could have 75W each, my inspector gave me a pass for using LED lights so the circuit is nowhere close to capacity.

Hi Maureen, sorry for the late response. If you do have a 5" can than I'm afraid none of the Cree CR6 or LR6 products will work, and Cree doesn't make a 5" retrofit product. You could go with the Halo RL7 downlight which sits somewhere between the LR6 and CR6 series from Cree and is designed to fit 5 or 6 inch cans. It puts out more light than the CR6 and has a 3000K color temperature, which is not quite as warm as the 2700K, but I personally like that color temperature more than the 2700K and use it around my house in a couple locations. Most people who have bought the RL7 from us our happy with them so it may be worth a try.

Bulbs compared to lamp modules like the Cree CR6 and Sylvania RT6 are at a disadvantage as 1. The LEDs are not forward facing in A19 style bulbs, unlike the CR6 and RT6 modules, resulting in more light being trapped in the can. 2. The modules are engineered to dissipate heat from the LEDs within a recessed can housing. 3. If BR or PAR bulbs are used, the light spread is more constrained. 4. If you choose lamps with a temperature of 2,700-3,500 degrees Kelvin you should find them similar to normal incandescent lamps. Above 3,500 degrees Kelvin the lamps start getting whiter and bluer. You can see them for yourself at Home Depot or Lowes.
