That's a huge space. I don't see how one light fixture would be able to light the whole area.

Typically in an open concept, while you don't want walls, you may want visual cues that help separate the large space into smaller, more human-scale areas. This can be done with things like rugs and light fixtures that help define functions for various spaces.

You might want to consider using cable lights if you want less obtrusive lighting and mixing that with some larger fixtures.

Thanks for the input! The kitchen, though open to the dining/living, has an hvac soffit so the ceiling won't be a continuous plane. The plan was to do chandeliers/pendants over dining and living and supplement with lamps (on sideboard adjacent to dining table and side tables in living area with a possible additional floor lamp) Now I'm concerned the overhead light won't be enough and I'll always have to have lamps on. It's not too late to add some recessed lighting on either side of chandeliers. Will that look too busy?

While others are not, I'm a fan of recessed cans for general lighting in that you can put them on dimmers so they need not be terribly bright, but when you want to clean or whatever, they can be turned up and really light a room.

You can think about using them for accents as well which will help light the space, for example over windows, to highlight art on the walls, a fireplace, etc. You can get trim kits which direct the light in specific ways. By lighting the perimeter of the room you make the whole room feel warmer and brighter (instead of inky shadows in corners). You want to think about the whole lighting scheme when doing a room...uplighting (torchiers, uplights), downlighting (recessed cans, cable lights, ceiling fixtures) and mid-range (sconces, lamps, chandys)
