thermostat wiring and settings ?

I noticed my insulated home is not as warm as I want it. I set the Honeywell 1-Week Programmable Thermostat - RTH221B to 70 and that should be good. Oil boiler. So today I bought a simple thermometer and am reading a 6 degree difference to what the thermostat says. I called Honeywell and they had me check the wires. She said mine was wrong and guided me to correct it. It is just heat with no fan. I have a green wire and a white. The white was correct going into W and she told me to put the green into RH and not G where I had it. This house use to have forced hot air. So the pictures shows how I have it now. I don't know if this will fix the 6 degree difference I am reading ?? I am posting this just as I made to wire change.. One hour later and the system is running but I still see the discrepancy from the unit to the thermometer as in the photo.

turns out the plastic thermometer is reading low so my thermometer is closer than I thought.. So as long as the wires are correct, which another forum said they were then the thing to do is try to ignore the numbers and just heats to be comfortable.. A flannel shirt is always welcome in the winter and sometimes even a sweater to keep the bill at bay.

is this a trailer or modular home so you have to go to the furnace to switch it to cooling and fan? If so your programable stat will not work on that system. You would have to run new 4 wire and do a lot of rewiring at the furnace. Later Paulbm

And just how do you plan on ensuring the circuit is off before working on it? This is past what you know how to do and are comfortable with. Pay someone to perform the work. Do you have a way of measuring the torque of the screws used for the wiring?

If pulling a new wire is difficult or a problem, you might want to consider the Honeywell/Resideo RedLink product line. The thermostat has a wireless connection to the furnace - not Wifi, but a proprietary RF capability that connects wirelessly to a receiver unit near the furnace. The control/receiver unit is mounted near and wired to the furnace as if it were the thermostat, then it handles the communications to/from the thermostat via its own wireless send/receive capability. I have two Redlink stats for two different systems in my house, they work great. An optional internet interface allows control from a smartphone, tablet, or PC.

Did you just install the new thermostat? It would never have worked with the G and Rh connections.

I would not trust a cheap mercury thermometer. The glass vial can easily slide up or down and makes it useless. Invest in a quality digital temperature gauge if you want to know the temperature.
