Lovely photos of your great plants. I hope you planted most of them, or I will be SO jealous if you found a woodland with all of those wonderful plants given to you by Mother Nature.

How long have you had this property, and how small is it, really? And lastly, how do we "heart" the photos, if that is what the icons represent?

Glad you all enjoyed them. Tumblr is a blogging platform that is similar to Pinterist. I'd say 99% of the content you see on it is people 'reposting' photos which is how the platform is intended. I'm only posting original photos. I 'heart' something you just set up an account which then allows you to do that and follow someone.

The woods really is tiny, probably smaller than a quarter acre. The original owner - now in his 90's, planted many of the original flowers. I've been here about five years and spent several years removing buckthorn and garlic mustard which the last owner allowed to flourish. I've also been adding lots of new plants which I've either started from seed, root stock or plants I've gotten at various nurseries. I've also been activity splitting bloodroot, ferns etc and moving things around and expanding some of the patches.

Last year I cut up some sod and expanded out a section of the woods to add some transitional sun/shade plants and grasses. I'm also looking at converting some of the other sod areas to short and mid grass prairie plants.

I also have three small flower gardens which is where I have most of the tulips, alliums and other non-natives that I take photos of.

All together I have close to 100 species back there. Looking forward to the spring when things start coming up. I'll be posting new photos and doing a lot more commenting.

Hello-I'm impressed with the quality of photos. My pictures do not turn out nearly as good as that Tell me about your camera and how you get such nice close ups. And, the Lady Slipper was a good way to end the show.

I've been shooting flowers for some time so have a couple techniques that I use. Currently I shoot with a Nikon D800 which is an extremely high-resolution camera but I also do a lot of portraiture and large-scale printing so this works for me. I shoot most of the flowers with either a 90mm macro lens or a 28-300 zoom. The zoom is actually pretty nice even though it's not the fastest. I mostly use natural light, but for some of the shots I'll use a flash or flashes which can help if you don't have a lot of light.

I've also shot a lot of the photos with my iPhone. Sometimes I get really great shots with it.

The lady slipper is nice. I'll be posting some more in the next few days. I have two that I planted a couple years ago. Sadly they didn't bloom last year, I think it was just too wet and cold of a summer.
