Sorry to bump this! It's just occurred to me, would I be better off to repot this again, lower down? This might help stabilise it a bit and stop the lean? The last time it repotted it, when I divided the pups, was in October or November. Not sure if it's perhaps too soon to do this again but I really want it to get full and strong again! Apologies for putting 3 posts on this thread before I even get a single reply!

I think this is a problem of potting aloes have absolutely massive root systems i once measured one it was two feet long don't over pot but don't underpot deep pots work well for big root systems in my opinion

Eep. Just popped it out of the pot to have a look. I don't think the problem is a big root system. What do you think? Is it a lost cause?

Not a lost cause but you have to fix what caused those roots to rot off in the first place. It will readily reroot. Cut off any brown/dead/mushy areas and let the whole plant dry for a day or two. Than fill a pot with good, new, fresh gritty soil. Make sure the plant is getting good light/sun. Water on the morning of a sunny day when you need to water (in winter) so that excess water drains off/dries quickly.

Can I just ask, to clarify, when you say cut off the brown/dead/mushy areas, do you mean just the roots or on the stem as well? I assume it's a good sign that there's a nice white root there too, but the rest are pretty brown and I don't know how thorough to be with the cutting of roots and/or stems. It was in a normal potting soil soil when I got it first, and I only transplanted it to a cactus compost in October when I learned how bad the original soil was.

I'm not convinced that you have an Aloe vera. That stem makes me think it may be another Aloe, or maybe it just needs more sun. Nevertheless, the advice is the same. Better draining soil and more light, just like Woodnative said.

Light may be a problem in Ireland in the winter. A south facing window would be good. Just find the sunniest location you can. Search on here for gritty mix. You will find many threads on this mix and your Aloe will thank you. Regular potting soil holds too much water and the roots will rot. At least add 50 percent perlite to the mix.

This is an Aloe vera that I was repotting at a year old. You can see all the roots and lack of stem.

Any roots that are slimy, very soft should be removed. The little white root may actually be a pup starting! Yea

If the stem is soft and mushy, yes you should cut back to firm healthy tissue, let it callus and repot. Your stem does not look rotted in the picture, but feeling it will tell you better. The soil will stain the roots and stem, so feeling for mushiness is a good idea. Rotting roots will probably smell, like rotting fruit or veggies.

With new potting medium, your Aloe will be putting out new roots for you in no time.
