I don't think those hooks on the stocking hangers would fit over top strip of stone, Tibbrix. That has been my big dilemma.

I have weighted stocking hangers that sit on the mantle. They are only maybe 3" deep...they aren't strong enough to hold a filled stocking but they are fine for displaying them up until Santa arrives ;-) I bought them several years ago at the post-Christmas Target sale.

Would something like that work for your ledge? Looks like Target has a similar offering -- mine is more of an antique brass finish but this looks nice too

Grew up with a similar fireplace, and we hung the stockings from the fire-tools holder, I see you have one there!

DH's family tradition that we carry on is that the kids leave their stockings at the foot of the bed on Christmas Eve, and Santa fills them there. The nice thing is, Santa leaves little toys and puzzles and Mini Lego kits that keep them busy so mom and dad get a few more minutes of peace :) The stockings hang on their doors (with command strips)'until the big night, nice decoration.

Melle, I don't think the weighted things would work. We have no ledge at all. It's hard to see, but that stone that looks like a "ledge" doesn't stick out enough to hold anything.

Bpathome, that is a great idea-- the fire tools holder. I definitely like the price best! I will see if it is high enough to hang the stockings when I get home.

The stands seem like a great idea! We don't hang our stockings from the fireplace, because we burn it most nights. Instead, we hang them from the bannister going up the staircase.

I also hang them from the banister going up the stairs, as we don't want weighted hangers to bonk the kids on the heads as they pull down their stockings, as they are too little to get them any other way, and I know that's what would happen. I wonder if those Command hooks would stick to the stone? They don't damage drywall if you take them off right, I found that out the hard way.
I like the idea of putting the stockings outside the kids rooms - as they tear into them noisily, that'd be the wake-up call! Then I might be able to catch them before they go downstairs . . .

You could put a small L shaped nail into the wall itself very close to the mantel and hang the stockings from that. You can either leave them or remove them for next year. The hole will be small and nearly invisible.

How about command hooks...they are easy to apply and easy to remove when the socks come down.

I have a stone fireplace with no mantel also. I found a metal stand for stockings that looks like a freestanding fireplace screen. It stands on the hearth in front of the fireplace opening and has metal hooks for the stockings. I found it at Kirkland' s or a store similar to that.

I can't believe no one here has a home without a fireplace! There has to be many many who have had to be more creative--think out of the box on this one. I believe one year in yet another home without stairs or fireplace we used the back of chairs ..if stocking are a must in your Christmas world you will find a way!!

In one house we hung them from just below the top of the wet bar! The cup hooks are still there, and hold lighted garland.

In another house,we hung the stockings from wall-mounted shelves.

Hanging them on the bedroom doors solves that problem and keeps the kids busy in the a.m.

in one house we used 'masonry/brick' light hooks which were little plastic hooks that could adjust abit to the size of the mortar joints and fit in there... they were for hanging lights and that's how we used them, but were pretty strong if you got it in secure...we hung a fairly large wreath using one too...

We have a low hearth about the same height as yours and we just lay them on that so that they drape down. I like the idea of hanging them from the banister and may do that next year.

Growing up, we just lay our regular socks on the hearth of the small fireplace.

It turns out most stores around me are sold out of hooks and hangers and such, but I ended up finding these at Target, and hanging them off our shelves.

If the stockings aren't going to be filled and need to be accessible, how about handing the stockings above the fireplace? You could take down the current decoration, put up a wreath, and place stockings to either side of it.

I have a fireplace and mantel.. but I don't hang my stockings there. I put them on another wall near the fireplace.

I know you have stone, but wondered if something along the lines of a brick holder/clip would work?
There's quite a few designs out there, but I linked to one I found (from a google search). I see they have them at local home improvement stores as well as Amazon...

We have wooden hangers that can be used on any surface and hold a lot of weight. They do not depend on the weight to hold the stockings, but the design. We found ours at a local fireplace store. I did see them in a LL Bean catalog a couple of years ago, not sure if they still sell them. Attached is a photo of them on the fireplace with stockings. The next message will show the hanger close up (I don't know how to post more than 1 photo per message).

Glad you found a cute way to hang them, sas95. I was thinking you might string some cord with clips just above the firplace and hang the stockings by the clips but those holders look nice.

I have a fireplace with typical mantel (similar to mjocean's), I made a mantel scarf and sewed small loops into it and used ornament hooks to hang the stockings from the loops, works really well but if I were to stuff the stockings so they had weight I'd probably get some small S hooks.
