I know this may not be what you are thinking of, but if you really like the indestructiveness of the current option, you might want to look at office furniture for a coffee table. They can be attractive, but typically are made with laminate tops that are nearly indestructible and they tend to be less expensive. Perhaps an interim step like this might work until your family gets older and then you would feel more comfortable with a more expensive solution.

Center the sofa on the window. Consider a sofa table behind the sofa in order to add a place for a lamp. I think the blue chair is really too small compared to the sofa scale and maybe should be replaced. Add a round end table with lamp or pendant, and an IKEA oval table that looks good with the sofa. Stationary drapery panels on the windows could add some additional texture to the room.

I'd hate to hide that gorgeous rug with anything too large. Maybe you could find something that is very open in design. Beverly's post would look nice and not hide too much of the overall design. Another would be something like seagrass (there was another post by beverly with a seagrass bench used as a coffee table recently).

I might also look at rotating the rug 180-degrees, which would put more of the brown tones against the sofa and one could 'see' the actual pattern when facing the sofa. Agree with kswl about adding different pillows. I would go with greens and blues to coordinate with the rug.

KitchenDetective- yes that is the media cabinet, thank you for finding and posting!
KSWL- The roman shades are not gray- must be a monitor thing- they are actually a soft turquoise slubby linen with cocoa threads pulled through, the color works very well with the space.
Beverly- thanks for your thoughts, the blue chair does look small in the photo, I dont think it is so small in real life :), my husband loves the chair so it is staying, he has short legs that must be why he likes it. The couch is usually centered on the window, the rug is often centered on the couch but the room is small and the woodstove is out main source of heat for the house. I move the rug back to protect it from cinders and sparks when it is a teen's boy's turn to tend the fire. They are not as careful as I am. Thanks for confirming round end table in that corner. That was where I was leaning but my DH was not convinced.
Annie- I am not opposed to the idea of a laminate top table- it is the den and that could be really fun too.
Outside, Not hiding the rug is one of my issues to so I have been thinking something with an airy base. I even thought glass top, but that is not popular with the family.

I like Beverly's mockup. I'd pull the sofa and chair more into the room. I'd use a rectangular shape coffee table.

This table is inexpensive and open, so as not to hide your rug. The top looks easy to wipe clean.
