Advice on where to buy plants - Detroit Metro area
Comments (8)Went out to Telly's today. It was further away than I thought, but it was a beautiful day and I had the time, so I figured I'd go for it. Ok selection, didn't find what I was looking for, though. Its selection included many things I don't find at the nursery I listed previously, but also there were many things that they didn't carry that the nursery I listed before does carry. I found hardy cyclamen, which I have just recieved from mail order after not being able to find it anywhere locally. Telly's also had a large selection of Hellebores. I also found quite an interesting selection of Clematis vines, but unfortunately none of the 5 I am currently searching for were available. Inside there was a large selection of non-hardy fruiting trees (& Passionflower Edulis). It was a good pleasant trip, but I went home with nothing as the items that I may have considered were a bit more than I would be willing to pay. I may have to go back if the cyclamen corms I purchased and have planted don't make it, but other than that I will likely not return there anytime soon. ~Chills Maybe we should start a thread where people request items they have been looking for and can't find locally. I know I looked for those cyclamen all last year before ordering them online. Had I known about Telly's having them I would have gladly gone there....See MoreMarble Slabs in Metro Detroit?
Comments (4)I used Michigan Marble in Detroit, at the recommendation of both my builder and my tile man. They are located in a pretty scary part of town but have been in business for a long time and do a lot of commercial work. When DH and I went to pick out our slabs they even commented that not many people actually go down there! However, I feel they were very capable and priced competitively. We paid $50/sf for Carrara installed. Nicole Here is a link that might be useful: Michigan Marble...See MoreBlooms on a chilly morning in metro Detroit
Comments (11)Jean, I just got my oriole feeder last year, after noticing an oriole checking out my hummingbird feeder. Last year they only frequented the feeder for a few weeks. This year, there are so many orioles, I can hardly believe it! In my Birds of Michigan book, it says they are a common bird here, but I think they spend a lot of their time hanging out in the large trees in the woods. It's nice to see so much more of them this year. I've noticed some purple finches eating the jelly too - I just put jelly in the cups, I don't make nectar for that feeder or put oranges on it. Debra, that monarda is Purple Rooster - I really like the color, it's a nice deep purple color. Tie and Tails was definitely one of the best opening purples this morning. More are open now, but some aren't even fully open yet, the temp hasn't hit 70 yet and it's not sunny. Mantis, the spiky flowers with Yellow Monkey are veronica. I have several, but I think those ones are in the area where I had one that I think was Purpleicious (sp?) and it did have seedlings, so it may be some seedling. I have others in that same violet color range, I think Eveline is one. Some of my veronicas (and some coreopsis and calamint) got majorly hit by bugs this spring - I guess the weather conditions made for a booming population of bugs. At least the veronica blooms are still pretty, even if the foliage might not look so great. I have this week off work and am spending it at home - it's nice to have plenty of time to enjoy the flowers, take pictures and share some of them!...See MoreNew construction in Metro Detroit.
Comments (5)This study concerns mini splits, but, in a general sense should be of use to you concerning operation of high efficiency, variable speed, equipment in efficient, well-built structures. I believe that good advice about the use of setbacks is difficult to achieve as it depends on the rate of heat transfer from the building and the operational characteristics of the equipment. If equipment manufacturers would have a 'setback recovery" mode that allowed reasonably fast recovery at an efficient output, the discussion would be over. This is true for heat pumps and boilers as I have looked into it, and I am reasonably sure that furnaces are similar. Long-Term Monitoring of Mini-Split Ductless Heat Pumps in the Northeast K.
