That is an interesting question columbusguy. We have pulled up all the old kitchen flooring and there is a shadow of where the old cabinets used to be. They blocked the current basement doorway, and this confused me - how did they get into the basement? Maybe there was an alternate access somewhere else, and the crawl space might be a clue. Although, why would you want to crawl into a cellar? The neighbour has the exact same set up but they can't access the inside of their house from the crawl space. Ours had plumbing and heating pipes put through the wall, so they busted out a portion of the stone foundation. Maybe it is related to the chimney that runs through the crawl space on the wall where the original exterior of the house meets up with the crawl space? So the mystery remains....

Screw corrugated metal roofing up from below. Attach different thickness furring strips under the joists to create a pitch. It will be hard to clean the fine stuff that falls through the cracks onto the roof. You could coat the corrugated metal with a roofing acrylic paint before installation. For the floor, pour a slab. Install wood decking on sleepers over the slab. This should help keep out flying and crawling insects. You could also put a layer of insect screen right under the deck boards before screwing them down.

Home Depot also sells tin roofing in several colors. I plan on building a wooden frame covered top and bottom with the tin roofing on an angle. Sloping to gutters. Also making it removable for ease of cleaning. The dry deck and underdecking is great stuff too. Just too pricey for me. I got a quote of 1200 for one system in materials alone. I can diy my own for around $300.
