i think part of your problem.. is how many times you go in and out of this door.. and how often it will be pissing you off... lol ... which would be highly appropriate.. given the room ... see what i did there... lol ....

One cabinet shop in my area did repairs for a city housing authority and this was almost a daily occurrence.
Carefully draw 45 degrees lines which fall barely outside the broken area and the 45 is angled such that the lines are farther apart as the lines move toward the center of the door. Then draw a vertical line connecting the angled lines. Draw the lines just barely outside the broken area. The resulting shape is a trapezoid and the shorter parallel side is at the edge of the door. Cut out that area. Cut a close-fitting patch from solid lumber which is slightly thicker than the door. Apply glue and tap the patch into place with a bit of thickness protruding from each side. Then drill from the edge of the door and insert a short piece of 1/4" wooden dowel at each end of the patch to lock the patch in place. When the glue is set for a day, sand everything flush, use wood filler to fill any imperfections, Sand again when the filler is dry. Do the lock cutouts and refinish the door.

Yes it is fixable if you have a router and know how to use it etc.
What you could do is cut out the bad section of the doorâ¦..very careful so you donâÂÂt mess up the other pieces. Cut a piece of wood to replace what you cut out but make it an inch and a half longer at each end. Then using your router route the edge of one size so the other door pieces can fit into/or up against them. What you want to do next is create a lap joint for the new piece. Just use your router to remove the necessary wood for making the joint. Glue everything together and youâÂÂre finished. Now if you canâÂÂt follow this and don;t know how to make the necessary cuts etc do as the other folks said and buy a new door.

While you have the piece away from the door, mark and cut out for the door lock pieces.

You may have to paint the door to hide your handy work.

Well, that was a nice door. Unless you have considerable woodworking skills and specialized tools, you're not going to be able to do an adequate repair, and, even then, the repair would probably need to be painted over to hide it. You're probably looking at several hundred dollars for a craftsman to fix it, or more for a matching replacement door.

With the right technique, that door could have been freed with some other implement than your foot, and without damage. Next time, maybe call your husband first.

Hardware stores sell metal sleeves in various colors with latch holes already cut making them easy to install. Apartment houses buy them by the gross.

I think Ken's idea is the best, if you can find a donor door elsewhere in the house. The size will probably be wrong and it'll require some work to get it in. But you don't want a run-of-the-mill replacement.

You might want to check out the old house forum--the people there may have some ideas on dealing with old doors (that trap kids inside).

Whatever you end up doing, unless you're pretty good at woodworking and stuff, you'll probably need a pro.

Even though I wasn't there, it looks like a good decision. Kids are far more important than doors. If you can't fix it just know the door had a righteous end.

I know you are trying to twist it into being a sexist comment, but it really isn't. Obviously the OP couldn't think of any way to open the door, so she kicked it in. Calling someone else who has experience with this sticky door and might have some other less damaging ideas on how to get the door open is a good idea. In this case, the other person happens to be a male.

And the kids age wasn't specified, so we have no idea if there was any panicking or danger involved. The kid could be 17 years old. Let them sit on the crapper playing on their iphone while you figure out how to open the door.

I accept that the kicker of the door had a good reason and appropriately weighed all the alternatives.

But the fact that the husband was mad probably means that he knew a way to open it. If kicking it in was the only alternative, why would he be pissed?

A few giveaways.
The imprint of the door knob and lock plate along with the key hole for a skeleton key. Hole for the knob was not cut with a hole saw..

I second trying to locate a donor door or one from an old house that has been torn down or check locally for someone that deals in such items from old houses.

Tip from a guy that grew up in an old house with door knobs and locks.. lol

Keep a Phillips and a Flat head screw driver that fits the screws on the door knobs tucked in a drawer of each room.

Next time something like this happens just take the door knob apart and pull the pin out of the striker plate.. Open the door.

It isn't a big deal to glue and clamp the missing pieces back in place. You probably won't get perfect alignment, but so what? Hit it with a block of wood wrapped in sandpaper and refinish.

Any man who has an inoperable door in his home has no business complaining when said door gets kicked in. That's the price for not keeping up on your maintenance.
