Comments (21)I presume you mean floridagardenER.com Calling a place "north" or "south" doesn't really tell me anything about what will grow there or the climate. Sorry. Especially when I have to reference a website that explains it. I lived in florida for a very long time and never understood it when I lived there either. If you want to know more specifically about the areas I lived in, does this tell you? South Florida Space Coast Treasure Coast First Coast Nature Coast Gold Coast Central Florida Bay Area Southwest Florida all names created by the media. Can you figure out where I was or what I was growing??!! I think the reason this all pisses me off so much is because when I was living in "the treasure coast" and two hurricanes hit 2 weeks apart, the territory was claimed by both the south florida stations and the central florida stations. It was just to the south of Vero Beach (see how that example all comes into the picture now!?) and after the storm there was little mention of the aftermath in my area on the south florida stations nor was there on the central florida stations. It was ground zero for both hurricanes, most local piss ant radio stations were off the air so anyone in the community was basically alone in the dark with no information. So it makes me mad when the media creates bogus community names to make viewers feel like they are all apart of it and to keep potential new stations from getting licensed when in fact they are only servicing a rather small geographic area that cannot be described by ambiguous terms like north/central/south/east/west. Central Florida = Orlando. PERIOD. Tampa Bay = Hillsborough and Pinellas. ONLY. South florida = Miami, Fort Lauderdale and under certain circumstances, palm beach county. North Florida = Jacksonville. THAT's IT. Southwest Florida = Fort Myers. AND ONLY Fort Myers. West Florida = Pensacola. This is really what the media means when they say they "have ___insert bogus market name here___ covered". The people of florida have been brainwashed into used these bogus community names in their business names and other parts of everyday life. People on internet chats and forums use it because it's anonymous. No need to be anonymous here guys....See MoreAt what night low temp do I need to be concerned?
Comments (34)Duh, Now I see the confusion about the lights. HUGE difference in heat output between the two types. It probably takes 10-15 of the ones shown in the picture to equal one of the old style I was talking about. The big issue I see with the little ones is that they are wired in series and one bad bulb causes the whole string to go out. A single 13 watt CFL causing 15 degree temp rise makes sense. It might raise the temp more in our lower humidity. 5-1-1 sounds much better for holding some moisture than Gritty. I'm making Gritty work for succulents out of direct sun but everything else needs more water retention in my sunny/hot/dry climate. When I had 30 plants in black plastic pots this Summer, I struggled to keep them happy. Putting them in a East-West line and shading the end pots helped a bunch. I think the low humidity makes a big difference because the sun bakes plants here much harder than my previous house on the beach. Our average rainfall for June, July, Aug, Sept is a TOTAL of 1/4"....See MoreHow is everyones plumies doing in these unusual cold temps!
Comments (40)Karen, As with a healthy diet for a human plants have similar needs. Just like human supplements, viamins etc. It is required by law all fertilizer packaging must have a approved label telling the levels of major ingredients. Always you will find the letters N P K each with a following number. Example N10 (nitrogen) P10 (phosphate) K10 (potassium) representing the major elements. I hope the following article I wrote several years ago clarifies the science info for you: Most in the plumeria hobby have been taken in by the high middle number phosphate (P) baloney of the marketing by Miracle Grow and others only to see very short term results and very little cold or heat resistance from their plumeria. Fertilizing plumeria or any plant for that matter is important to ensure healthy growth. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium need to be added on a regular basis. This is more important in containerized growing. The percentages of these nutrients are labeled on fertilizer packages. Also, many times you find listings of minerals and other beneficial additives. Adding minerals is important for healthy plant growth. Nitrogen (N) aids in strong leaf and stem growth and promotes dark green leaf color. Too much nitrogen causes soft foliage and delays flowering, while not enough nitrogen causes stunted growth and leaf yellowing. Phosphorus (P) is thought to be needed for root development however new studies suggest that it is not the primary element; calcium plays a more important role for root mass. Phosphorus assists plants to set buds in the flower cycle. Not enough phosphorus can cause stunted plant growth. Potassium (K) improves plant hardiness in both hot and cold weather. It also helps in seed production and improves the size, color and quality of the flowers. Not enough potassium causes a weak plant, reduced flower quality and flower size. There are different fertilizing methods Liquid or Granular. I recommend Liquid because you have complete control over the amount released (PPMs/TDS). If you use a Granular or Time- Release the break down depends on the amount of water used or by how hot it is, therefore if it rains or it is hot and you water often the amount of feed could be to strong for the plant. This can burn the roots killing your plants. The opposite as in very little water means no food for the plant being released. Also, there is no way to calculate the amount and or when your plant is receiving nutrients. If you water on a regular basis use a complete and balanced liquid fertilizer. It is important to note frequent watering leaches out soil nutrients quickly and you'll need to fertilize regularly. This makes the case for continuous feeding program or "fertigation". (fertilizing every time you water) If you noticed phosphorus (P) may be the root promoter and then is secondary in its effect on blooming. In all hot climates it is very important to use a higher potassium (K) number. Also, for cold protection higher potassium (K) is very necessary. So a fertilizer routine in Inland Southern California as well as Arizona should be different than any of the high middle number (P)fertilizer products have to offer. Another reason for the high K number is; potassium reaches a higher concentration in plants then any other mineral element and activates over 60 enzymes. This process increases cell strength and general plant hardiness. I hope this helps, if you have more questions just ask. Jack...See MoreNew AC output temp
Comments (4)Thanks folks. I'm getting about 17 degrees lower than room temp. It just seems that the air coming out doesn't feel really chilly. But then again it's only a 6300btu unit. I originally had a 12000btu unit but it cooled down my room too quickly. didn't stay on long enough for dehumidification. Thanks again, Doug...See Moretigerdunes
