How far in advance did you start planning?

I've posted a few questions recently about building a house - that will be quite relevant once I'm actually BUILDING a house. But right now, it's still just a dream and so I'm wondering: am I dreaming too soon?

How early did you start actually planning your home build? One year? Two? Five? I suppose you can never plan too much, but prices do change over time. I recently spoke to a contractor who gave me a VERY generic cost per square foot to build (as a starting point when looking at plan size and complexity), but will this information be completely outdated in a few years?

My hope is to save enough money so that when we build (and get a loan) the mortgage payments will be around $1,000 (not including taxes or insurance). On the one hand, the longer I save, the more money I'll have, but on the other, prices will go up too.

So, how early is too early to start planning?

Thanks!
