The brag time: Master bathroom remodeling is done.

Check out our before/after pictures during the project. Everything except for granite, cabinets and the glass wall is myself and my wife. It's a steam shower (the unit is under the bench).

Beautiful transformation. I love your color scheme. I have never heard of the little plastic pyramid things you are referring to. Having just painted 26 cabinet doors for my daughter's mobile home, I probably could have really used them. Instead, we used everything but the kitchen sink as sawhorses and scrap plywood atop them. Then, we used my collection of magazines to lift them up a bit, but there was some stickage, not much, but whatever you are referring to probably would have come in very handy. Please provide details.

Lovely! I like the classic white tile and porcelain and how you used furniture pieces in the bathroom. I love that the storage at the end of the tub has pull-outs that can be reached from the toilet. Your custom sink and backsplash and counter are unique and beautiful. Yours may be the first bathroom sink I have seen in which a small or medium dog could be washed! That is a good thing! I showed your pictures to my DH because I am thinking of classic tiled walls with a chair rail for when we redo our bath in a couple of years. He liked it! I was expecting him to say, "too old fashioned." He did not, he said it looked nice. From him, nice is a compliment. He even liked your rows of listello. I was just at the Tile Shop's site the other day looking at the Hampton tiles because someone was selling some on Craigslist. I am hoping to do as you did and get what I can cheaper there, and fill in the rest from the store. I can see that you worked very hard to secure all of your materials - and then cut the floor tiles to size and culled the Hampton tiles, too! You succeeded very well in getting the look you wanted while saving money along the way. Congratulations, and thank you for the pictures and great detail and supply list.

To clarify, I didn't do anything but the spackling (on upper parts of walls, the lower parts and around the shower were new greenboard after carpenter pulled out the tile), sanding, priming, painting (walls and ceiling), caulking, installed the lights, mirror and towel bar (not shown). My parents hired a carpenter to pull out the old shower, reframe, pull out tile, put up new wallboard where the tile was, install the vanity (and that new shelf in the nook that he framed), he also has electrician's license so he put in new boxes for lights on sides of mirror, removed the old light over the shower and put in new LED light I bought. They hired the plumber he recommended (who happened to be the most expensive in the area according to my uncle) to install the new shower stall, move the drain and supply lines for shower, install new toilet in old location, and put new countertop on vanity and connect supply & drains (I think he might have replaced some corroded copper piping for the sink supply lines too). I should have done all of it (except the framing) since I have done a bathroom remodel in our old house that involved moving a drain and changing supply lines from old shower to new Jacuzzi, so I've sweated pipe and also done wiring, just don't have a hole saw to cut round holes for boxes but could have borrowed one. I also served as GC on our new (admittedly modular) house. My cousin or my mom's step brother could have done the framing and the shelf (they're both cabinetmakers, excellent finish carpenters who have done work for me) and we could have figured out the shower stall and I'm sure the laminate floor. My brother taught me to tile so if we had been able to talk them into that I could have done it, or they could have flown him out to do it (and visit) for a lot less than what they paid.

thatsmuchbetter: Although I also suspected that it wasn't reasonably bid, at this point your $1,000 tile job theory isn't holding up. You have an entire agenda to push and you don't care if it matches up with the facts of this case or not. For the most part we have to take the information that we get here at face value. Sure there are a lot of questions about how this job could go so wrong. If the facts are as presented - then a contractor took advantage of a consumer who didn't have a lot of sophistication about managing a job like this. To Elisia Ellis: You need to understand that if things are as you presented them, the cost of the work was probably significantly out of line for what you needed to be done even if it was done right ( I don't have all the details, so I'm hedging here). The work that was done was grossly incompetent at any price. That this could have gone so badly makes me think that you need some trusted help to resolve the problem with the current contractor and repair your bathroom. This should be a family member or trusted friend who can guide you on legal action, as well as helping you to make decisions with correcting the bathroom. It's not really likely for this to happen as you described unless a contractor was taking advantage of a homeowner without the sophistication and experience to manage such a project. You don't need to be shamed or feel ashamed -- but I think recovering your money and repairing your bathroom is going to be more complex than even the original job - and it's not something that you should go at alone. Get some assistance from someone who can help you to think through this (again, a family member or trusted friend who has business skills -- not a paid person). You will probably need legal assistance and such, but before you go there, you will probably need a trusted advocate who can commit to helping you sort through this.

Very nice and elegant! At first I thought you'd done the room in 1 month, as I looked at the project dates. Then I saw more clearly that it took a year and a month, now I feel better, LOL.

Very cool- is this in Greece? I lived there for about 18 months in the early 90's and still have dreams about the food-mmmmm.

Oh, that is just beautiful. We just started our remodel, in the process of the demo, ugh! We are doing all the work ourselves too, we save a lot of money but it takes time. Messy work, stuff everywhere I should be used to this by now but it still drives me crazy having things everywhere. Your photos are inspirational.

It is beautiful. I am considering a similar color scheme. Is that real travertine? I was planning on travertine in my shower, but the tile showroom guy scared me a little about using it where there is a lot of moisture.

You give me miracle hope!

We are rounding the final turn on a 2 year long 100% DIY project of 2 bathrooms and a laundry room, (including a nearly full replumbing of the house plus a side trip of a renewed pantry conversion of the 1950s Bathroom from Hell, and a new kitchen floor).

Your bathroom looks great! Good job!
