SUCCESS! Streakers made it.....
Comments (15)I am very glad to see them make it. I thought for sure they would be a shriveled mess of what was once some nice seedlings, if they arrived at all. As far as documents go, if you notice in the first picture on the bottom left, there is my document I sent explaining what was in the package. I guess that was good enough for customs. Those were 4 of the over 45 that I paid a whole $15.00 for at this years HC. I am quickly running out of room in my mini greenhouse. So I thought I would spread some of the joy. I have right at 99 seedlings and a vast majority of them are streakers. I got very lucky for my first year. The ones that have been outside for a couple of weeks are growing like weeds. (middle flats in the picture below) Here is a shot of my little slice of heaven from today, I only wish is was big enough to pull up a chair and set in it. and I have another 29 starters coming next week, plus the 50+ seedlings that are still under lights inside. I can't wait for it to stay above 50 at night so that I can get them potted and outside. I think the Bio-Tone is the stuff!...See MoreTop Fertile Streakers Are?
Comments (16)BTW, people will tell you to "Set a goal." That's good advice. But when you are a newbie, you don't know how to set a goal. So here is what I did (my daughter taught me this), I walked around my garden or looked at other gardens and decided what I liked. Then I would take a look at a plant I really liked and say to myself, "What if that plant were variegated?" or "What if I had a blue one of those?" So I would play this "What if..." game until I decided which of these What if's excited me the most. Then I sat down to figure out how to make that happen. What plants would I need, what crosses would I make in order to get closer to that goal. Write this stuff down. And remember if you have 20 goals, you really have none. I would suggest 3 or 4 goals to begin with. If you want, start a thread about what you want to accomplish, and email me if you want help. Steve...See MoreIf you could buy just one streaker...
Comments (28)Streakers are a lot of fun IMHO. They are interesting but do require some occasional "maintenance". You have to understand them though. A streaker by definition is not stable. Some say some types are more stable than another but it really depends more on the individual eye/plant you are looking at and how much streaking is in the leaves. the more random stripes of variegation that are in the leaves, the more likely it is to produce more similar eyes. E.g. if a leaf is all green with just a strip or two of variegation that is much less likely to produce a variegated/striped eye. You will see this even on parts of plants. If you have a streaker that is producing all green leaves on one quarter of the plant and the rest is well streaked......the streaked portion will produce mostly more streaked eyes (maybe an occasional green, or stable variegated or albino) but the eyes that grow off the green portion will be all green. The caveat on this example is that the greener portions will be stronger (more chlorophyll) so may eventually take over the whole clump if not removed. Confused?? I need some good photos. Now to your original question.....' Fascination' has been around for some time.....is a reasonably fast grower......and a classic breeder that produces viable seeds. Do you have a limited budget.......you may try to trade with other folks on this forum come the growing season. Offer Hostas or other interesting garden plants....See MoreAvenge...
Comments (43)BungalowMonkeys... If I need to succumb to the razor... perhaps you should also get some "ink" while you're serving time... Hosta #2 was plucked (ouch!) from Steve in Massachusetts's garden - "an Uberageous f2 seedling. Seeds from Trudy Van Wyk" Is this how you repay him for responding to your own post inquiring about "Top Streaked Hostas?" I guess it's one way to scout out the bounty... but a little obvious perhaps! I see that you also took my advice and cropped the original shot. Perhaps we'll educate ourselves further with regards to our chosen craft over the coming weeks as we pay our debt to society! Suggestion for the ink... "Never bite the hand that feeds you!" BC P.S. Steve's garden seems to be located in a rather dodgy, dubious neighbourhood - perhaps he should relocate to another part of town with a greater police presence, or consider installing anti-theft technology!...See Morein ny zone5
