No, Susan, actually, I love them! I thought the first one I saw was a bat, then I wondered why I'd be seeing a bat in the daytime, so I took a closer look and it turned out to be a huge moth! I must have brushed up against it accidentally or disturbed it in some way. I know (intellectually) that it was just a coincidence that they appeared on my property right before the hurricane, and none of the superstitions about them are true - anyway, I like them enough to take a chance! I found a picture of eggs on a Black Witch section of a butterfly/moth website, and they're brown. If BW eggs are brown when oviposited, then these are definitely not BWs, but if the eggs on the website were brown because they were about to hatch, then they still might be BWs. We all know that our butterfly eggs turn brown before hatching, so that is probably the case with moth eggs. MissSherry

I can't remember any Rhop species that use Boltonia as a LFP, but can't say for the Micro or smaller Macrolepidoptera families as I never spent much time doing life history work on them. Not much help.

KC; That is interesting. My husband and I were having a conversation coming back from camping at Shawnee state park this weekend. Of course we waited for the hottest weekend this summer to camp. After all the nice cool weekends. It had rained too. So, there were mushrooms of all kinds concentrated under the oaks. We were discussing how oaks seem to support so much life. I was saying that I suspect it would be because they need to concentrate such high amounts of carbohydrates in their seeds. But who knows. Wish I could post some of the mushroom pictures I took. They were amazing. We camped under the oak trees and I realized that the brown spots covering our tent were frass! Yech....

More likely the stinkbugs (or shieldbugs). The stinkbugs here lay eggs in oriented clusters just like the ones in your image. These eggs will likely produce tiny, rounded bug nymphs.
