I'm actually feeling better about my palms. The Adonidia's I had that were small 2-3 ft and had three trees growing together... I lost 2 on each group, but one in each is coming back. My Adonidia's that are 8-9 ft...coming back. I lost 3 alexandria's that were planted Dec 21st. All my Areca's survived, but just lost 1 or 2 small trunks. I have 3 Spindles that are ok. My Coconuts....I thought one was gone, so I cut of all fronds and was trying to dig it up, but it was to hard to dig so I left it. Well, to my surprise there is a NEW green frond coming up...I think it's gonna be ok. I did spray all w/ copper fungicide, but not until April. I do have one other Coconut that I'm watching. This was my 1st exp. w/ freeze damaged palms. On the coconuts, I pulled out the rottrn middle fronds and that was why I thought they were gone.

While I've never grown them myself, Christmas Palms will start themselves if they roll under the mulch after falling off the tree. My neighbor has dozens of volunteers in the ground from his palms. Last week I yanked a Spindle Palm volunteer that was growing up between the bromeliads planted below it. (Don't worry, I didn't toss it out. Saving it for whoever wants it at the Swap-a-Que.) Queens, Robellenii, Washingtonias, all seem to pop up without any help from me. I must have a dozen Licuala spinosa from seeds that ripened and fell. And don't get me started on Arecas. I know the nurseries all use specific techniques, depending on the palm. But for home growers, just plain dumb luck seems to be the best route to follow.

That's a very fair price. I paid $200 a tree here in Boca and that did not include taking out the root ball or grinding it down. However, let me address that topic - If you take out the root ball, you must fill the sides of the hole with good topsoil before you replant in the same hole. I would also mix some palm fertilizer in with the topsoil since the old palm's micro-roots will have depleted the soil. If you must pay extra to have the root ball removed or ground down, and don't wish to. Have them cut the palm as close to the ground as possible. The stump will decay on its own in a few years or you can pour chemicals on it to hasten the process. Then simply make new holes for the new palms or trees.

If I had to guess I would say it is to late. Here are a couple pics of mine after last winter-they were cut back almost to the ground. In this 1st pic you can see how pale the spear,etc is- the whole thing pulled out. Here is a pic of it cut back,I didn't think it would make it because of how far down I had to cut to find live tissue. You can cut down(for starters)as far as down as the socket went that pulled-don't worry about hurting the palm at this point,my guess is it has no chance without being cut back. Keep cutting down,if you do not find white tissue before the absolute soil line it's dead. My guess is you will find a cored out center but hopefully you will find some healthy tissue, if you do it won't take long for it to pop up,maybe a week if in a warm sunny place and if the roots are still alive.
