What to plant this time of year

Here, in south Tn it is cold damp, freezing aat night, possibility of snow later this week and through Feb.
I would like to start planting wild life foods plants and wild flowers and anything to replace what timbering, small farming and whatever else has done to the property since 1770s.
What can be planted in woodland edge and among large open spaces among mature trees and some hillsides under trees. Wild grapes and muscadines and so on.
I don't think i could mange funding for the number of expensive plants that Burpee and others list.
What plants are native and cheap or easily obtained, that can be planted now?

Nature plants all sorts of things in the fall : acorns, hickory nuts, wild grapes and many other things that fall from the trees or are consumed by wildlife and then pooped out.

Those items are cheap - often found on the ground itself. Look around.

If you want cheap, there are County Soil Conservation Districts, State Nurseries, and a couple places that specialize in feed lots for deer. Unfortunately, those all mostly sell bare root stuff in the Spring. Lowes often has lots of cheap bargain-bin plants in the Fall, but it's a little late for that. This would have been easier a month or two ago.

Bare root Black Walnut are cheap, as are hazelnut and hickory. American Persimmon, service berry, and chokeberry are often a bit more expensive.

I would hold off on the banana.....tender perennial there. I just planted a Desert Willow and it was an iffy decision. If we have a hard winter with low temps I may lose it. Depends on the tree really, tropicals like banana I would wait until spring. Doc, I don't know where the university area is in Tucson but there are two nurseries there that I like. Mesquite Valley Growers - Speedway and Pantano and Desert Survivors on Starr Pass near I-10. Desert Survivors is run by disabled vets who start lots of native trees, bushes, plants. Mesquite Valley is very upscale. If you want cactus plants you cannot miss with Bach's Cactus Nursery, Thornydale north of Cortaro Farms. HTH.

You know that shallow narrow wood planters facing south or west will dry out very quickly and may even require twice a day watering. If you were planting in the ground, the recommendations for Vinca rosea, Marigolds, Zinnias and Portulaca would make better sense. I don't think roses would do well there unless the height and width of the planters could accommodate a 5 gallon size can/soil volume, and was hooked up to automatic drip irrigation. More Derick type plants such as Hesperaloe, Agaves, Cactus, Euphorbias, etc might be better choices if you don't want to water twice daily.

Hi, I'm 9b and have had success with Bok Choi, Rapini, Broccoflower and regular Broccoli, as well as Fennel. I try to do continual plantings and stagger the start times by about a month. It also works well for the Rapini and Brocolli types if you just chop off what you want for that harvest and let the plant keep producing.
