Looking for premade T5 HO indoor lighting for Jade plants

Hi folks!

I've brought my Jade in for it's first Winter. I don't have any exposed windows (all have overhangs or are North facing) and would like to promote growth. Any recommendations for a premade T5 HO setup (need a stand so it can be moved as well)? I had great experiences with T5 lighting with my saltwater reef tank, so feel maybe a 4/6 bulb 4ft setup would be fine. Also, what bulb type would be best? Is the 4000k -6000k range what is best and all the same? Thanks, this forum has been very friendly helping with my yard and I thank you in advance.

Hi everyone, John L here. I'm just getting into the indoor lighting part, but I have two light fixtures. I purchased both of them at Amazon a few weeks ago, and have just set up my grow station about three weeks ago.

One of the light fixtures is a [url=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HEYCRI8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1]DuroLux T5 system with four 6500K bulbs[/url]. The other one is an [url=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005H1C74O/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1]EnviroGro FLT46 4-Ft, 6-Tube Fixture[/url]. The former is very light weight, while the later is quite heavy.

I found that the former, has the best packing system, where the T5 bulbs are packed separately, and tucked into the undercarriage. Nothing broken in shipment. The later had the bulbs placed within the receptacles, and when arriving, two were broken.

Both seem to work quite well, but I still haven't gotten my two broken bulbs yet, so I cannot judge what the extra T5s can do.

I'm currently experimenting with CFLs purchased locally. I discovered that Duke Power has a special program here in the Raleigh/Durham area, and some places offer the CFLs at a very reduced price. Habitat for Humanity Thrift Store has CFLs for $0.50 each, and they come in a box of two for a dollar. Great price, but they are warm white, and good for flowering.

So I kept looking and actually called Duke in search of other place to look for the (Daylight)5600-6500k range. I was referred to WalMart, where I looked around. One WalMart did not have the Daylight CFLs on sale, so I went to a couple more, and Bingo they have a box of four 23W bulbs in Daylight for a price of $3.48. Not as good as the Habitat thrift store, but they were in Daylight.

I'm self-employed( make beautiful things for the interior design business) and have my shop in the basement. The ceiling is not finished, but stuffed with insulation. When it is removed, I have a nice recess that is about 14 1/2" wide and 9 1/4" deep. Its a great place to set up a bunch of CFLs and use the trusses as a modified reflector for plants I have brought in from the outside. The low cost of the CFLs are so good, I should be able to come up with a nice light system for a smaller price than the two T5 fixtures above. I'll try to keep everyone informed as to my success here.

As I said, I am new to all this, and even though I try to thoroughly research things, I'm sure there is much I have left out of the process. I'm trying to figure out how this forum works, so I'm not sure how to post everything. It's not like the software I use on my own forum.

Here's an early 1 month update: Green Pot: YOLO Wonder (Bell Pepper) Blue Pot: CA Wonder (Bell Pepper) Off-White Pot: Contender (Green Peas) Mason Jar: Caribbean Red (Habanero) Orange Pot: Cayenne, Orange Habanero Pink Pot: Beefsteak (Tomato) Issues: Fungus Gnats: Added 1' of sand to ruin life-cycle, so far so good. Purple Leafs on Tomato: Apparently this is 'normal' as root system catches up. Also some curling/droopy leafs, either it'll grow out of it or die (oh well it's going to be to 'big' for this experiment anyway). Rolling Leaf on Cayenne: Apparently this is 'normal' also, but I 'pruned' a few of it's bigger leafs off because it was shading my Orange Habanero (which is higher priority than the Cayenne). Changes: Using melted snow for watering, our rural water is pretty nasty (for people too). Added thermometer, temps are around 80-82 during the day at dirt level, ~70 at night. Light cycle changed from 6am-10pm to 7am-9pm, saves power and didn't make a difference. Using 20oz water bottles with a 1/16 hole in the top for watering, good water placement vs the spray bottle. My 3 year old talks to my (baby) plants, (she planted most of them under strict adult supervision of course)... Lights: 4' 6-lamp T8 SO with 5000K bulbs is doing all the lighting now for the small pots, lining up some 6500K's but I think its an un-needed expense. Requests: Peas, after moving the 'runt' orange tree to a 10-gallon I had an extra pot so I planted peas. (wife's request) Now my mother wants me to start seedlings for her, this could be the best or worst of things!

@taz: My original concerns either go unanswered or get lost in conversation about other topics. I don't know enough about this to write a guide, but I also don't think anyone here can write one either. T5 Fluorescents at 5000 lumens cost me $3/month in electricity so I don't know why you're saying it's too expensive. Also, I am aware the sun is free but my high rise apartment has no access to enough sunlight to accomplish this with good results. So please stop telling me the sun is free. I know this, and it will still be irrelevant to my situation. @wordwhiz: Eric Runkle's research says that a minimum of 15 mols of light per day will get the job done. How many T5 bulbs at 5000 lumens a piece will accomplish this in a 2x4 grow area less than 12 inches from the plant tops? Sorry but I forgot the equation.

It's unbelievable how thick you are penfold. The chart displays a 5000k line for one. Also, I never said that it wouldn't fall in between these two. I said that by using all 5000k bulbs, it isn't the same as using an even mix of 6500k and 3000k bulbs because you will not receive the same intensity at the ends of the spectrum than if you used 5000k bulbs alone. Yes, daylight and red bulbs balance somewhere in the middle toward white light, but you're still missing the point. You're missing the advantageousness of having higher radiant power by not mixing the 6500k and 3000k bulbs since their peaks at the blue and red ends are far greater than those at 5000k. Higher peaks in the appropriate areas means more useable light for the plant which yields better growth. It's not as simple as mixing red crayon with blue crayon to make purple on a piece of paper. And no amount of evidence will convince you if your mindset is this simplistic. @taz: Just give it up man. Learn how to read too. I didn't make the initial comparison, give personal opinions without evidence or threaten you. Your "opinions" are no longer required for future reference.

Thanks everyone. We actually had colder weather the first couple of weeks in December (-18 F.) than we are having now, although we do have 1 and 1/2 feet of snow outside on the lawn. Mike, the few bucks of extra electricity to get plumeria to bloom in the middle of the winter is worth it! Between this and the light bulbs outside in my palm boxes, I figure it may cost me an extra $15.00 per month. Mike, regarding mites, what a chore! I must watch for mites carefully, every day. The lights are bright enough I can easily spot any. If I see just one mite crawling around, I spray the whole plant. So far, by doing this everyday, it has kept the mite population under control. My worst problem is waiting to water a plant now and then until it is too dry, and then it's oldest leaves will turn yellow and fall off, but the plants are doing very well. My seedlings that I started in July and August are now a foot tall, have robust trunks and large healthy leaves. I wouldn't be surprised if they bloom before one year old. I noticed the Sun Blaze fixtures say 120 volt only. Does that mean you have to check the individual outlet, since not all houses are 120 if I remember correctly? My house was built about 25 or 30 years ago I believe.
