Comments (12)Thanks guys. Tom, the larger tree is P. omorika 'Pendula'. Edwin, you're right. I whipped out my magnified glass and found that the 'Weirdo' has tiny hairs on it's shoots, making it an engelmannii. Are there other known cultivars besides 'Bush's Lace' that are pendulous? (I really hope it isn't 'Bush's Lace'--I already have one.) Will, I think the difference is in the sources. If I recall you got your 'Straw' from Girard's? I got mine from Rich's Fox Willow Pines and paid a pretty penny for it. I got my 'Silver Seedling' from Don Howse who always has nice plants....See Morearound the yard
Comments (9)My yard pales in comparision to some of the adventures you've taken us on, Sluice. Thank you for those. The 'Silberlocke' is a new acquisision this fall, USPS messed up somehow and the shipment took a full week. He came out of the box looking like a fastigate form. No doubt it would probably level out with the weight of new growth, just speeding it along I guess. This is the end of 'Skylands' second summer under shade cloth. I'm excited for next year free range. I covered the pole holes with bricks for now incase I need to re-install the screen. It's tough to leave them alone sometimes although that's usually what's best. I'll follow up with spring pics of both 'Taylor's Sunburst' showing the same buds to see what develops. I'm amazed at the re-growth of buds when they're damaged early enough. I don't think the bud boring bugs are local, rather came in with these 3 plants, they didn't spread and systemic looks to have taken care of them. As I said there's similar wild buds on 'Mint Truffle' and few similar but less wild on 'Gold Coin'. I assume there'll be some thinning next winter, good for scion wood production. Gotta love conifers. -Dave...See MoreRootstock not cut off. Cut or wait?
Comments (13)in my z5 MI.. with its short growing season ... second pic above ... i would cut away the part.. just above the first whorl of the understock ... next spring ... and then forget about the rest for 5 years or so .. lol ... i dont have spare grafts of my own sitting around if i screw it up ... i dont know what clem means the growth is done for the season ... of course they are extended for the season .. but the rest of the season is storing energy in the roots for winter.. and next years growth if you cut off half or 66 % of the root masses food making machines .. needles ... what is going to store the food??? BUT TO BE SURE .... there probably is no wrong answer ... BTW .. that is a huge piece of scion ... the pice behind the UStk trunk.. how much of that was extended this season??? .. if you know??? ken...See Moresc77 (6b MA)
