new mtn home - pls help w/ new lawn
Comments (22)SD I called Lesco and they gave me a few recommendations. They told me the TMP is their best selling seed - and that is what they sell to most of the landscape companies. They also suggested a Transition Blend after I told them about my concerns on the rocky soil. One of the guys said that if TB won't grow - then nothing will. If I went with the TB, then I would have to mix in some rye. I saw on another post that you used the Lesco TB. I too will not have a sprinkler system. What do you think about the TB vs. the TMP? Have you since switched to TMP? Lesco also mentioned a seed called Fawn and said that this is close to K-31 if I want that type of grass. They said it is a very wide blade fescue. I am not sure I want to go down the K-31 route based on what I have read on this forum. It seems there are other alternatives that would do just as well in my soil and area, but yield a nicer lawn. For the spring planting - If I go with the TB, then I would probably add in 30% annual rye and 20% PR to make my own "contractor mix" but with the better TTTF from the TB. If I go with the TMP, I would probably add in a little AR in since I have these "dirt police" that I have to deal with and 20% PR might not be enough. Any info you can give me on the pros/cons of the two types of TF mentioned above would be very helpful and appreciated. Thanks...See Morecolocasia, alocasia, xan-whatever...
Comments (10)Hi, Rockyn! I'm just a few miles North of you in OKC. There is another member who is in Dallas and I'm sure they will respond also. I have purchased some of my EEs from Plant Delights. CHeck them out at www.plantdelights.com. They have alocasias, colocasias, and xanthosomas, too. They also have the big Mr. Stinkies - amorphophallus that some of us like, too, and a few other aroids. Another good site to check out is www.aroid.org. You can see lots of pictures of different kinds. A&B Tropicals and Asiatica also sell them online. I have been lucky and a few trips to Lowe's and Home Depot have yielded a few like Alocasia plumbea nigra, Colocasia esculenta 'Black Magic', Colocasia esculenta 'Illustris', and Colocasia esculenta 'Fontanesii'. From PD I have purchased Colocasia 'Ruffles', and 'Thai Giant'. I also have Alocasia macrorhiza that I bought as a tuber labeled "upright EE". Black Magic, as name indicates has black foliage. It needs a bit of sun so the leaves will remain black. Otherwise it reverts to green. Illustris is a green/black mottled leaf; fontanesii is a puplish-black-green leaf. As a rule, Alocasia leaves point upwards, and colocasia leaves droop. Xanthosoma I am not too sure what sets it aside in another class; I'm sure someone else will pop in and 'splain it. Thai Giant can eventually get leaves about 5' across; probably not in my garden, but it will be large, very large. There are also some alocasias/colocasias will yellow mottling in the leaves. One that I have recently purchased was Alocasia lutea. The veins and stems are yellow - it is gorgeous. Others like Hilo Beauty and Nancy's Revenge have yellow markings as well. Sometimes you just get lucky at HD or Lowe's or at your local garden center, or making trades with others. But, as I just started, it's difficult to make trades until you have enough stock. Some or most can be wintered over in the ground - that I have anyway. Happy Aroid Growing..... Susan...See MoreDoes anyone grow alocasia or colocasia ?
Comments (16)Thank you Shawn..o thats much easier, lol. I did see them in the park's catalgue, but I just get tortured by those catalogues. I looked at the one I got last week with one eye, like I was watching a horror movie, lol. I can't afford it right now. If they have a free shipping promo goin then thats dif, lol. It's the shipping that kills me. I'd rather try and get it around here than have to pay shipping. I am hoping HD or Lowe's will get them, I'm the same way, need to see it. Nothin worse than ordering a plant and getting a crappy lil half dead thing delivered to your door. Daniella...See MoreColocasia, Alocasia? Plant IDs
Comments (3)Hi. Pic 1 might be a an immature Colocasia esculenta 'White Lava' with no white areas yet or a Colocasia esculenta 'Red Stem'. There is a 'V' or 'Y' shaped purple spot where the leaf stem (petiole) joins the leaf. Pic 2 is an Alocasia of some sort. Maybe an Alocasia 'Portora' based on the slightly ruffled and scalloped look the leaves have. At its current age it also looks like an A. Calidora or an A. Macrorrhizos. If the leaves get rounder and not large with age it may be an A. gageana. It will be easier to tell what Pic 1 and Pic 2 are when they get older. Pic 3 could be a Colocasia esculenta antiquorum 'Black Beauty' or a darker cultivar of Colocasia esculenta 'Illustris'. All of these like sun....See Moretropicbreezent
