Just started pruning. When do you do it?

I am a little late but not by much. I am on the Central Coast CA and the roses never go dormat. I had to cut off some buds, which I hate to do. The roses would bloom all year long if I let them.
It does make it hard to do trades since everyone else pruned in the Fall and now their roses are under a couple feet of snow. Anyone else just starting to prune and interested in a trade?

Roses that never go dormant (sigh). Unless you want some dead looking sticks, I don't have anything to trade. I won't be pruning till the first half of March.
But I do love your name (and it's spelled the right way, too-ha). Clare is a beloved family name for me. Diane

Diane - Thanks. It is a family name with me too and passed down several generations. Alas, it ends me. One son and no daughters. DH didn't go for the name Clarence for our son. LOL

Maybe we can do a trade in the future. If no one shows any interest in the cuttings I might try to root them and later trade rooted cuttings.

We're "mapped" as a Zone 5, but it acts more like a Zone 4 here, and early June is our planting-out date. I can put them out sooner if I make a tent for them in the greenhouse and keep it warm at night or during cold snaps. We'll have random cold nights and even a couple snows or frosts through most of June, so we need to keep on our toes. Starting indoors in January or early February, the plants are often so large they need two potting up sessions and it gets to where there is no room to place them where they still get enough light. Leaves begin to drop and I end up deep- or trench-planting 3-foot tall twigs. So I aim for late February germinating and get them out to the gh when room gets too tight indoors, usually sometime in May. I deal with the weather then as it's dealt to us, every season is a little different by a few weeks. Inside the unheated gh, with simple tents or covers for the plants, it only takes some Christmas lights or a small 60-watt bulb and a small fan to keep them happy, even when it dips down to 15 or so outside. Colder than that, I must add a small heater in the gh proper. A remote thermometer and frequent visits keep me advised. We enjoyed our first tom on the 3rd of July last season, that's the earliest ever for us. If I wait till mid-March to germinate, I don't have to deal with heating them in the gh as much, but it's also getting into late July or August for ripeness and late-season types barely squeek in before frost, so I need as early a start as I can manage. Too early comes with its own set of problems. But, if you can pot up adequately and give the whole plant lots of light (not just their tops from an overhead shop light), plus handle the much trickier hardening off and planting out of these overlarge "seedlings," it can work to your advantage. Since you have just the one or a few early starts, maybe just keep it to a large pot and set outdoors when it's a good time. That way, you can always haul it back in if there's a late frost or for hardening off. Just protect it from strong winds so it won't blow over! I also sell a few plants and getting that just-right combo of good size and vigorous health always helps sell them. Spindly, sickly too-early plants or too-late, too-small don't work. Timing your own season is the key, with proper light and space to grow indoors till then. -Ed

That would be a great (and large) topic! We have discussed such matters here before, although I'm not sure one could find that single all-encompassing thread. This really gets to the heart of the matter though-who is the target consumer (man I hate that word), who is this thing being grown for, and for what purpose. My own view is that within the confines of the commercial, landscape end of things, many unwise and unhelpful things are done to trees purely for economic reasons, the public having been trained to expect the trees to look a certain way. Ken's mention of whips is a good example. Whips in the wholesale nursery trade literally look like sticks to most people. They for whatever reason have simply never seen how a young tree starts out-all energy being devoted to height increment. These organisms evolved in the company of one another, in a plant community we call forest. Typically, a forest starts following some land-clearing event-forest fire, windstorm, logging operation...and all the trees start out at roughly the same time. Competition is fierce. The only useful thing for each little tree to do is to grow upwards, racing for the sun. A huge percentage of these don't make it to maturity. All the slowpokes end up getting shaded out by the more vigorous stems, leaving the runts behind. If you're at all in forested country, try to find a stand that has been clearcut in the last five years. "You think the hair on your dog's back is thick! And these are all saplings...or "whips" if this were a commercial operation. Branches come later.

And follow the standard rules. if your plant is in a medium that is different from what it's to going into remove it all and only use the stuff in the new pot, or ground. No matter how much better the soil on the roots is the tree would rather have the crappy soil so all of the roots are in the same stuff. Google bath tub effect for more information. You can use the soil that was in the roots to top dress. Do not amend the dug up soil. Unless your willing to dig very deep and amend every single inch of soil that the tree will eventually use. All the way to the max drip line. Even then you will have to be aware of the rain and watering so you don't get the bath tub effect. Well worth it if you live where it's dry and have poor quality soil. If your interested in this please post a new thread here for advice first so we can help you not make mistakes. I really want to help people do this as I'm confident if done right will be a significant boost to the tree. More than any fertilizer or watering program. Much more. It's an extreme amount of work you want to get right the first time. Leave the soil as is no matter how crappy if you don't want to amend it ALL as deep and wide as your plant wants and top dress once it's planted. Much easier and the worms will eventually mix it for you. Always have the roots point out into the new soil. Cut off all circling roots. Water well when establishing but don't go crazy. Create a ring around the tree made of dirt to make sure the water goes down and not out those first few weeks. The ring will disappear on its own. If it's hot and sunny, shade the tree until it's established. Try not to leave fruit on it while transplanting. It's just not worth stressing the tree while it established itself in its new home if it's going into the ground. If it's potted the tree will not be as stressed and can support fruit if big enough. if I think of anything else I'll add it to the list.

That drought-resistant shrubs and trees in SoCal need undisturbed native soil to establish symbiotic relationships with soil fungi to truly go unwatered for 6 months of the year. Mycorrhizae don't typically need to be bought at a nursery, but all our yards sure need it to be in the soil for plants to do their best through summer/fall. Xeric plants need to get established, then they seem to do best when largely left alone, with not much more than some mulch, compost teas in the rainy season and light pruning to thrive. Masanobu Fukuoka foresaw this in One Straw Revolution (a book as radical in some ways as anything else the 70s had to offer) when he advocated abandoning modern ag methodologies, especially tilling, focusing instead on preserving soil food web ecologies in the topsoil. I doubted it for years, but modern soil science and my experiences sure have made me a believer in it

Clare, we've used the name Clare for both male and female family members. My Dad and half brother were named Clare, but they were named a long time ago. My older granddaughter is named Clare, plus a few of us have it as middle names. It's a lovely name for girls now, but not so popular for boys, I agree. Diane

Here in North Texas, we are advised to prune a few days before or on/around Valentine's Day. Personally, with over 100, (thankfully, many are still babies and don't need pruning) I'll be starting around February 10th.

Here in Mid- Arizona (just south of Sedona) I started this week and will be finished by next week, weather permitting. The roses were already showing signs of new growth.
The snow has finally melted and now we just have rain.

I have been hard at work pruning and don't have many unpruned roses left. Too bad, maybe next year. I am trying to root a yellow sport of Chicago Peace this winter. I usually have good luck rooting cuttings outside in winter.
