I second that it looks a lot like a hibiscus and yes, they don't like the cold weather.

looks like a rose of sharon ... which is an H ....

and they are not houseplants.. for the most part ...

was it recently potted?? .... potting alone can cause leaf drop ... including doing it in winter ...

not to mention the entirely wrong media for a SHRUB.. and such.. in a pot.. and kept indoors...

and i wonder if that pot has drainage????

Looks like H. rosa-sinensis, as several have stated. I don't see your location, but if you are in a cold-winter locale, you can probably maintain it indoors over winter. Give it as much sun as possible. Keep it evenly moist...never sitting in water, never bone dry. It will lose most leaves up to the tips due to lack of humidity, and watch for mites, too. Since it's a woody perennial, it will hang in there until spring, but look pretty bare. Once spring weather is settled and regularly above 50, it can go out on a deck or porch, gradually getting it used to full sun. Fertilize it regularly and keep it watered and grow it hard and fast to get buds and blooms before cold weather sets in again. I'm in Indiana and repeat that cycle annually for about ten big pots. Boy, do the leaves drop when they come inside! It is not a houseplant and will struggle if it's inside all year, though you may get a few blooms. Good luck with your plant. Bob - We had once placed it on our porch so that it gets some sunlight and a Deer ate this plant. Since then we kept it in our sun room which is closed but receives a lot of sunlight during the day. We brought the plant inside as the temperature dropped. Thank you for the detailed instructions!

If you can keep it cooler in winter, it will drop fewer leaves (and get fewer bugs). Mine are in 55 degree garage near a window. I think it's partly the huge drop in humidity (coupled with lower light levels) that they hate initially.

It needs to go outside in summer. Mine are on deck where deer fear to tread. Yes, deer love them!
