Indoor herb garden

I am wanting an indoor herb garden. I'm planning on mints, chives, stevia, and thyme. What's everyone's indoor set up for their indoor herbs?

I have rosemary, basil and thai basil growing in 4" pots in my master bathroom with an eastern window. The basil is struggling because it is so cold in there most of the time. The rosemary is a cutting that rooted. It isn't growing but it looks good. The thai basil is thriving there.

I live in Holland where darkness seems to get the upper hand in winter time. I need extra lighting to get the plants grown.

First i bought some 6500k 23 watt lamps. but they dont do the trick. stems are to long and they grow to slow.

I dont know if light is the problem where you live, but if you have light you can grow almost anything.

im growing (but poorly): mint, parsley, turnip tops (only stems :( ), and spinach (this one needs a bit of cold to sprout so this one goes the best for me indoor strange enough.?

Im still wandering if i should buy higher wattage lamps.
If i use a lamp off 70 watt for 6 hours a day, it will cost me 35euro a year energy cost. dont know if thats worth it :P

In order to get a picture of the difference between soluble fertilizers and organic fertilizers, imagine cell membranes as the fabric chain link fences are made of. Soluble fertilizers moving through cell walls might be considered something like you pushing ping pong balls through the holes in the fence, while organic molecules are more like trying to push basketballs through. The basketballs would have to be broken down into smaller pieces before they would fit. If there is no one standing by to break the basketballs down (if there are reduced populations of soil biota to break down the large organic molecules) no basketball parts get through. MG houseplant fertilizer is probably not a good choice. I believe the % of NPK is 8-7-6, or very close to that. Plants actually use about 6x more N than P and about 1.5x more N than K. If you choose a soluble fertilizer, you would be better served with something in a 3:1:2 ratio. 24-8-16, 12-4-8, and 9-3-6 are all very popular 3:1:2 ratio soluble fertilizers. Dyna-Gro makes 9-3-6 Foliage-Pro soluble. It's not easy to find, but it's the best I've seen because it also includes Ca and Mg (usually lacking in commonly found soluble blends like MG, Peters, Schultz .....), and it contains all the essential elements in the ratio plants need for normal growth and in a very favorable ratio to each other, also an important consideration. Fungus gnats!! They infect every single plant indoors. They fly to each plant, lay eggs, eggs hatch and turn into maggots that chew through the roots. Weaking plants and then they get sick and die. You need a few things to get rid of them. First, trap as many as you can with yellow sticky traps layed horizontally on the edges of ALL pots. Then, get some Bt insecticide, the type that will kill the fungus maggots in the soil. Once maggots are mature, you get more tiny flies. The two procedures are the ONLY way to effectivly kill both cycles of these tiny bugs. They also love outdoor gardens and can spell doom for anyone who has a big greenhouse. I use a benefical nematodes as well, and they are watered into my garden soil in summer, to help control the fungus gnats. A few years back, my brussles sprouts were all loaded with these tiny flies. Nothing worse than eating some of the sprouts and seeing tiny dead black flies in the cooking liquid YUK! The ONLY way to prevent these nasty bugs from getting into indoor plants is to always use STERILE SOIL or sterile seed starting mixes. These mixes contain no bugs or pathogens, and if the gnats are in the plants indoors (even in ONLY one pot) they spread quite fast and you will have ALL indoor plants infected within a few weeks. Herbs need a lot of light. Unless you have supplemental light, it is tough to grow them inside. Basil also needs warmth in addition to light. Chives like cool weather better. Thyme needs very little water and nutrients. So each of those need different care. But LIGHT is the most important.

I have an herb garden in my kitchen, I grow 2 kinds of lavender, 2 kinds of rosemary, lemon thyme, oregano & sage. they are in pots ranging from 6"- 12" on a 60" long table w/ a Envirogro 2ft t5 4bulb high output flouresent fixture& they are all very healthy. the entire setup only uses 96 watts.
nothing like the aroma of fresh herbs, good luck.
