Free Rice - It's addictive

My friend told me about this site that I bet you all will love. It's called freerice.com and it tests your vocabulary. Every time you get a correct answer, they buy grains of rice to be distributed by the United Nations World Food Program. It's all explained at the site.

There are multiple levels, and the more correct answers you give, the higher your level. I got to 48, but it's late and I'm tired, so I'm going to bed.

I just thought I'd pass that on.

Oh, sarah canary - you are so right! Addictive! I only got to 46 and it not that early in the morning plus I had a full night's sleep. Thanks for the link.

I really enjoyed this site so thanks for forwarding it to us. I got 42 but couldn't seem to rise further than that. But I need a nap so maybe that's it.

(That's my story and I am sticking to it. :-) )

Wow, you folks are awesome, thanks so much for taking the time to post ideas and recipes, I really appreciate it. I'm going to ask tonight if eggs/egg whites are on the OK list because those macaroons are a great idea (and are a favorite of DH as well). Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. It's also found in spelt, I've just learned. So all of those products are out, along with a laundry list of other foods that seem to cause her stomach to cramp up. I love to bake - bread a couple of times/week, cakes, cookies, pies, etc. I feel badly for my neighbor as she's basically given up on all baked goods, which is why I thought I'd see if there were any possibilities for her that she might have overlooked. publickman I've brought quinoa salad a couple of times and am not a huge fan, but it's a good fallback. bons thanks so much for the recipes. The brownies and macaroons look great (assuming eggs are ok, I'd have to leave out the nuts) but the 3rd recipe won't work as was pointed out (milk). mom4j47 yes, this is pretty drastic and not by choice but for health reasons. My neighbor gets very very sick when she eats something not on her OK list. All veggies and some fruits are always welcome so I often bring those. Annie I'll check out the cornbread recipes (and ask her if cornmeal is ok). The meringue cookies look good although no nuts. dcarch thanks for the hint about Asian groceries, I've got one nearby. I have no idea how to use these flours though - anything you can share about them? Wild rice is a grass and as such it's on her OK list. I haven't seen wild rice flour (if it even exists) but I've got a really good recipe for a wild rice salad (includes dried cranberries and almonds) that I could bring sometime, with the almonds on the side. cloud_swift the cholo tiki recipe looks delicious - I know DH would love to try that. Teresa yes, rice just an additional food she is sensitive to, which makes things difficult since it's often an ingredient in gluten-free flours and foods. tami_ohio thanks for pointing out www.diningdownloads. I have a Kindle and will check it out. chi83 I'll have to check with her on coconut milk. I'm assuming almond milk is not going to work. I didn't know that coconut cream whips. compumom thanks, I'll see if meringues will work for her. Becky thanks for the recipe! Jessica thanks as well, I'll ask about corn meal because your recipe looks great. cynic I'm going to see her tonight and so will ask about all the ingredients I'm not sure of. I didn't realize flour residue hangs around. She loves the gewurztraminer that DH brings on occasion, so arriving with baked goods is not really all that critical. Her basic approach is to make a soup that she knows she can eat and assume that any other contributions from guests are not going to be something she'll be able to have. If the contributions fit her diet, it's a bonus. This has been a real education for me, both in getting to know this neighbor and in all the posts here. Thanks again to all who commented.

MKroopy, the fact of the matter is, yes, it’s a step parenting forum, but the MAJORITY of people that come on here are women talking about their BF/SO/Husband. First you say it's not a dating forum, but a step parenting forum, yet later on you say that there's no difference between dating someone and being more of a father to someone's child than their own father and that it's just a technicality. And you're right, for all purposes you are a step parent, in the same situation as all the other people that post on here that are dating someone with kids. So surely you can see how when someone is in a relationship with someone who has kids, issues are going to come up. The fact that they are just dating doesn't negate their need for advice. And I never said you deserved to be cheated on. I said "So who's fault was it that your wife cheated on you, twice? Her's right?" I thought the answer was obvious, it wasn’t your fault your wife cheated on you, that was HER fault. The same as it’s the man’s fault when he lets his kids misbehave, when he spoils his kids, when he lets his exwife harass his current wife. The person who is at fault here is usually the bioparent, which in most scenarios presented on this forum, is the MAN. And the advice to run a background check or talk to someone’s ex-wife was given ONE time, and not by the OP or in this post. You claim the women on this forum are bitter, yet the only person who constantly feels the need to drag out the story of how their spouse cheated on them, is you. You may think telling your story proves that you never paint all women with the same brush, yet constantly telling what she did to you over eight years ago could be considered bashing as well. If you truly didn't harbor any ill feelings toward her, you wouldn't have to mention how she "cheated on me several times, cost me my marriage, a couple hundred thousand dollars, and most importantly the ability to sleep under the same roof as my kids 7 nights a week, which is how I thought it would always be when I had kids" - suuuuuuurre, that doesn't sound bitter at all. I could trot out my story of all the terrible things my ex-husband did to me, but I’ve MOVED ON with my life. "If you don’t like my posts don’t read them.” Great point and I think you should take your own advice. If you feel like the posts on here are man bashing, then don’t read them! Hi Marlorena, There were a couple of threads a short while back about Filroses and importing their plants into the U.S.. I got some mixed messages about inspections and a quarantine that are required (or not). I am still totally mixed up, but my impression is that getting Filroses plants into, say, Canada, is a lot easier than into the U.S. Even Pickering in Canada has had recent troubles with U.S. red tape. I should contact Filroses and see what they say, but negative info about importing plant material has dampened my enthusiasm. Thanks so much for your comments, though. I still need that diplomat with the locking attache case, I guess. Diane

Got to 48, and donated 8000 grains-my daughter's soon-to-be-fiance (no ring, but an understnading, as we used to say...) is a teacher, and he uses this site as a combination vocab builder and good deed with his students.

I got to 48 but went back immediately and couldn't get back there....also donated about 8000 gains of rice. So at about 2/3 seconds every ten grains, that's about 2000 seconds or over half an hour of my life gone...

Oh well.

best level I managed so far is 72 !!!!
but since I am not a mother tongue I played with a handicap , like in Golf, and as a beginner I took the entire lot. 36

I got to 50, but found I had to draw on my (weak) memory of Latin roots for a lot of the words. Not easy!

46 was my best, and that included some guessing on words I'd never before heard and couldn't seem to find a root--like "plastron" is a breastplate. A few times it was the process of elimination which gave me the answer.

Yes, I know EXACTLY what you mean. Process of elimination was my best friend for this game. As for the term "plastron", I got lucky with that one. In fencing we have this piece of equipment we call a "plastron" and you wear it under your fencing jacket as extra protection against accidents such as broken blades.

Sometimes it seems the right answer just comes to you, even if you think you've never seen the word before. It's weird.

Thank you, Sarah Canary - I'm at work with nothing to do, so that was the perfect link just now. I got as far as 47, and then started vacillating between 42 and 46. I was pleasantly surprised at my sheer-guess-quota...

I got to 48, dropped back, got back there, but no further.
What suprised me was how many words that I was sure of when given the choices, but have no recollection of reading and wouldn't have been able to explain without the choices. An example of this was 'thaumaturge' - I knew the right answer, but where would I have read that????

Astrokath - do you happen to read Terry Pratchett? I knew "thaumaturge" from his works. In fact, Terry helped me with quite a few words on my way to a 50 - but there I stalled. Yes, addictive but very pleasantly so! Thanks, sarah_canary!! (BTW, I'm still looking for a copy of Sarah Canary to read - it has been surprisingly difficult to find at the library or my favorite second-hand shop - guess I'll bite the bullet and buy from Amazon.) Oooh, bwilliams -- Don't buy it just on my account. It is one of my all-time faves, but not everyone appreciates it like I do.

I'd send you a copy, but all of mine are out on loan. And they never seem to make it back. :(

Bren, I haven't read any Pratchett, so not there - maybe Harry Potter?
Actually, I often say I have a brain full of sh*t, I remember all kinds of weird facts and am a popular guest at quiz nights for that reason - none of it is of much use in the real world! Although my reasonably good memory is put to good use in my job in a bookshop, where so many of the customers *sort of* know the title they are looking for *g*
