I really enjoyed these books too, full of original ideas, characters, and well-written to boot. IMHO Stroud's and Phillip Pullman's works are vastly superior to JK Rowling's -- and would make terrific movies!

Have you read The Various and Celandine by Steven Augarde-- another unique trilogy in the works.

NO, but if they are comparable I must scout them out. I find on the GUARDIAN website that Stroud was paid several million for the movie rights to SAMARKAND in 2003, but no sign of a movie have I seen. It took ten years for THE PRESTIGE (another superb magician novel!) to get onto the screen, so I still have hope.

I have the first book in the series, but for some reason was unable to really get into the book. However, after reading this, I may have to try again.

Now that I think about it there have been a tremendous number of British magician novels out. All the Christopher Chant books are delightful, and MR. NORRELL AND JONATHAN STRANGE would be another. This cannot all be laid at the door of J.K. Rowling, since the Christopher Chant books were out well before Harry came on the scene.
