Last night, the DH and I were very fortunate to go to a talk hosted by the university featuring Peter Hessler, a journalist who writes for both the New Yorker and National Geographic and who is based in China.
I have read some of his work before (essay in the America's Best Travel Writing a few years ago and more recently River Town), and have found him to be both funny and respectful of China and its residents.
He was an ok speaker (he writes better than he does speaking aloud), but it was a really enjoyable evening. Hessler knows how to reach his audience and keep them hanging for more information from him. His talk focused on the modernization of a rural part of South east China, and how it was being affected by the new world economy.
Even if you're not hugely interested in China, this was entertaining and so I went and checked out his second book from the library (called Oracle Bones). Apparently he is on a book tour for his third one but not sure of title.
So - do you have a favorite travel journalist you would like to recommend or mention? Or do you have a country or countries that you like to read about when you do your armchair traveling?
