This is a new book by Charles Frazier which I haven't read but am making a Christmas list and wondered if anyone here might be able to express an opinion on it to help me decide if it would be a suitable gift for a male adult who is interested in history, particularly Native American history.

(That has to be one of my longest sentences ever. Feel free to correct my placement or non-placement of commas.)

Froniga, I live in the shadow of Cold Mountain and in Frazier's "neighborhood". (Actually the first village east of the Qualla Boundary ... Cherokee Reservation to people from outside the area) There was a really nice write up about Frazier and his book in the local free paper last week. I'm personally looking forward to getting the book... I think if he liked Cold Mountain this would appeal to him. Frazier did a very indepth research for this book, including much info from the Cherokee. Remember it's a historical FICTION... he based it on history and then wove a story. Comment from the Cherokee.."you got it right"

I'm looking forward to that one as well. Loved Cold Mountain. Even tho I was mad about the way it ended, I really was mad at how the movie changed it. Ah well. From what I have been hearing, this one is of the same caliber.

Thanks, I think I'm getting the picture now. I agree with your philosophy, calliope! I want to comment further, but it would be a bit of a tangent so perhaps I will start another thread. I can't until after I take a big exam tomorrow--this is a state licensure test which is grueling enough, but for me compounded by the testing center making a complete muck-up of my attempt to take it last week. I'm jittery about the exam content plus having to see and deal with those idiots (sorry, but really, it is warranted)--well, y'all can see I'm a tad stressed. Anyone with spare positive thoughts/good vibes/virtual sunflowers is very welcome to send them my way!

I am here tonight for a favor. I am in need of quick prayers for my 24 year old daughter. She went to the emergency room yesterday because she first started having stabbing pains in her chest then her left side began tingling and she was dizzy and had difficulty concentrating. She was tested for stroke and bloodclot and when they could not find anything, sent her home. Her pain went away but not the tingling. I took her to the chiropractor and she didn't do any work on her because just simply looking at her and her reactions to certain tests made the chiro ask me to take her back to the er. I took her to a different hospital and they have admitted her. I know someone asked if MS was in the family and I do have a cousin. They are doing an MRI tomorrow and after reading the symptoms tonight, realize that Elizabeth has several of them and they even mentioned some patients had pains described as stabbing which is how this started. I am scared for my daughter and pray that MS is not the problem. Please keep her in your prayers and I will keep you posted. Thanks Margo

I live in Sweden and came here from the rose forum on recommendation from Rosefolly, probably around 2001. Books and gardening are my main hobbies and I am especially interested in roses. I contribute regularly to a rose society newsletter. I have been married for 47 years to another reader. We have a son and daughter and five grandchildren who all live fairly close. Our daughter lives in the same village. I retired three years ago at the normal Swedish retirement age of 65. I worked at Uppsala University as an administrator my whole working life and dabbled in translation in my spare time, mostly various academic papers on computer science and sociology. I didn't understand much of the first but a little more of the latter. I translate mostly from English and a little from French, German and Danish, the latter three only if I am familiar with the subject. Another hobby is languages and linguistics. I didn't major in anything either as we don't have that system. I spent too many years at university studying political science, economic history, anthropology, general history of literature, English and Swedish. I know English well but my active vocabulary is much smaller than my passive vocabulary and my grasp of idioms is not perfect so I sometimes feel intimidated because there are so many clever writers here. My taste in books is catholic. I am reading The well-tempered garden by Christopher Lloyd at present and by my bed are two books I first heard of on this forum, Motherless Brooklyn and the complete Mapp and Lucia.

I'll play! I began the day by Leaving the Saints and admiring The Last Boyfriend. On my way to work I saw The Devil in White City, and walked by The Crying Tree to avoid Henrietta's War, but I made sure to stop at Tempest's Legacy. In the office, my boss said, Howard's End is on the Landing and sent me to research The Journal of Best Practices. At lunch with The Magician King, I noticed Tempest Rising in The Night Circus greatly enjoying One Dance With A Duke. Then on the journey home , I contemplated A Discovery of Witches because I have A Week to be Wicked and am drawn to The Secret Duke. Settling down for the evening in The Forgotten Garden, I studied The Art of Fielding by The Secret Keeper before saying goodnight to The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Connie, you truly live in a beautiful part of the world. I live in your "sister" state to the south but love those mountains dearly.

Cindy, I also was disappointed in the movie made of Cold Mountain but loved the book.

There is an article in today's newspaper about Frazier and Thirteen Moons. It has already caught the eye of the potential "giftee." I really think this might be the book for him.

I just read a review of Frazier's newest and it has already gone on my mental TBR list. I liked both the film and the novel "Cold Mountain." I read the book twice and kept waiting for the author to come out with yet another work. This one promises to be just as good if not better....
