Liz, just to show you aren't past your sell-by date why not ask all your maiden Aunts, country cousins, Bible-belt kin to give you copies of books with the number 50 in the title.
You could start with the Fifty Shades of Grey series, then move on to all the copycat editions with such titles as 50 Shades of Beige, 50 Shades of Alice in Wonderland, Fifty Hues of Hairy Legs and Morning Breath, Fifty Tentacles of Unspeakable Hue. Yes, these are all real titles and are probably deeply unsuitable for a nicely brought up English Rose as we know you to be; but hey, you are only 50 once.
So how about organising some readings at this big birthday bash you are holding . . . come to think of it why not ask the guests to come in costume. I'm sure your DH could supply the handcuffs and black leather is SO 'in' this season.

Book Depository has many Fifty books. I chose the "Fifty Shades of Chicken" by F. L. Fowler which has recipes as well as being a clever twist on the "Gray" books as a gift. Free Postage!
I liked the "Fifty Animals...." too.

I'm turning 50 in December, too!

Judith Viorst, who is best know for her children's books, has a series of poetry books for different ages. One is Forever Fifty.

Someone kindly(?) gave me the Viorst book called I'm Too Young to be Seventy. Guess when?

Not when you turned 50, I hope.

This book: The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared looks like a fun read for a milestone birthday.

Ha, Merryworld. I can barely remember 50. Seems young to me!

Under Milk Wood Dylan Thomas. This is actually a 'play for voices' done by the BBC but you really can't beat the narration by Richard Burton. It is available on CD/tape.
My favourite would be Oh! What a Lovely War which was first produced by Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop in 1963 as a 'send up' of WWI using the popular songs of the day. She was totally against all warfare and the film that came out of the show does a wonderful job in showing the futility of that most terrible conflict.
If you haven't seen it buy the DVD today . . . I'd send you a copy but I think the USA is in a different time-warp when it comes to these bits of electronic gadgetry (a money-making ploy)

Vee, if one has an "all regions" DVD player one can get DVDs from everywhere to play back. Luckily I found the player I have is like that so I can buy UK region films etc more cheaply. Sometimes the DVDs I want aren't available in Australia in any case
The original player I bought was faulty and was replaced by the excellent store (think John Lewis) with a better one!

Ann we used to have a TV set that accepted 'all region' videos and DVDs. Just had to remember to flick a switch.

And apologies to Dame Maggie. I elevated her to the rank of Duchess, but of course she is but a mere Dowager Countess!
Much is being made of the latest series of DA which begins this w/end with the family entering the Jazz Age. (give me strength)
