I checked just now, and the list of books posted has reached over 100,000.
I first heard about PaperbackSwap from someone's post on this forum, and am I glad I took a look! The book listings are growing in leaps and bounds--over a thousand a day--and I am finding more and more things I want to order. It is always exciting when someone else orders one of the books you are willing to let go, too. That holds true whether you hated the book or loved it, though for different reasons!
PBS costs nothing to join as of now (Membership may go to $10 or $20 a year later.), and you get 3 credits (with which you can order 3 books) if you post 9 books in the beginning. After that, you get a credit each time someone receives one of your books. You pay $1.42 to send books; you get the ones you order for free.
The site is very well cared for. What have you got to lose, except your time? (You may find yourself checking the book listings several times a day) I have already gotten some books I put on my wish list because the local library didn't have them.

Yep, the 100,000th book was added at 3:01pm I believe.
The person guessing the closest to the time was given 10 credits and the person that entered the 100,000th book was
given 10 credits also. Each credit entitles the person to
order one free book from the system.

I love paperbackswap too! I've already received over 30 books that were on my "must have" list. Now if I only had time to read them as fast as I would like to.

I prefer TitleTrader because it's international and you can swap DVDs, videos and computer games as well as books. In other respects the two are pretty similar.

Paperbackswap is great. I am enjoying the chat rooms. I'll check out Titletrader, too. I just started reading "Drowning Ruth" which I got through PBKswap, but is also a Bookcrossing book.

It's nice that you can read them and then repost them so someone else gets to enjoy it.

I joined, I posted, and I've spent $8.52 sending books out, requested one that never got a response and am waiting for a second one. My wish list is long, though, so I hope somebody gets to posting the kind of books I like-otherwise I'm paying for the privilege of getting rid of my old books! I could do it for free and benefit my library!

Ccrdmrbks: If you have no objection to letting us here know what nickname you are using on PaperbackSwap, and if you allow them to list you in the member directory, we could check your wish list and maybe come up with some of the books you are looking for.

Ccrdmrbks' post makes a good point and made me start thinking about the relationship between what I spend and what I get in return on PBS, so I did some calulating. If I remember correctly which books I sent out that were over a pound and so cost more in postage, I figure I have spent about $66.52 in all to send other people books. In return, I have received 55 books, making the price of the books I got $1.20 each. Pretty cheap, especially considering the fact that most of them were not available at the local library.

I'm still figuring out the mechanics. I'm now in the member registry as Carol G., or cece.

PBS has had 153,100+ titles posted, as of tonight. I find that so far I have received 83 books and mailed out 67. This does not include books that I or someone else ordered, but which have not yet reached their destination. Sometimes a book I wanted became available when I didn't have any credits to order it with, so I used PBS' provision for buying credits at $2.00 apiece. Still cheaper than the books would have been at a second-hand book store. The only trouble is that my TBR list is growing by leaps and bounds.
