Mystery read-alikes

I have recently thoroughly enjoyed reading series by Anne Perry, Victoria Thompson, and Will Thomas.

If any of you are familiar with these three authors PLEASE suggest similar writers as I'm coming close to finishing everything they've written.

Thanks!

karalk, I'm not a mystery reader, but I can suggest a website that will show you similar authors -- just enter the name and you'll get a map of additional authors you might like.

Someone here posted the link first a long time ago, wish I could remember who it was!

Hi Karalk,

You have named a few of my favorite mystery writers so you and I may have similar tastes in mysteries. I thought of a few you may enjoy:

Anna MacLean has a new series whose main character is Louisa May Alcott. I was hesitant at first but really enjoyed it. The first title is Louisa and the Missing Heiress.

Emily Brightwell's Mrs. Jeffries series is light and fun, very "cozy". I only suggest them because they are good in a pinch. I cannot read them one after the other because they are quite formulatic. But I like the characters.

Rhys Bowen's "Lady Georgiana" series, the first is Her Royal Spyness. There are five in this series with the sixth due out in September.

A "new-to-me" author named Ann Purser. She has two mystery series out, but the only one I've read so far is Hangman's Row Enquiry. I put her on my TBR list for my twice-weekly library trip.

Barbara Hamilton (aka Barbara Hambly) has a two series out, but the only one I've read is the one "starring" future first lady Abigail Adams, set in 18th century Boston. It is entitled: The Ninth Daughter.

Of course, M.C. Beaton's Hamish McBeth series is always a favorite, Elizabeth Ironside is a new favorite, Kate Sedley is a great mystery writer whose books are set in the middle ages, Sedley has about 20 in her Roger the Chapman series and I still feel that she cannot write fast enough for me!

If I think of any more, I will post again. Also, if you have not heard of this website previously, Stop You're Killing Me is a great mystery lover's resource. I shall post the link below.

Keep us posted,
PAM

Do you mean "roots" or "rhizomes"? If all you see is a mass of roots, you probably have a very healthy Fargesia nitida. If you see rhizomes (i.e. thick woody roots curled around the outside that you can unravel without breaking, then you may have some variety of runner indeed.

I have read and enjoyed many of the books mentioned here. I wonder if the James Herriot series, "All Creatures Great and Small", "All Things Bright and Beautiful", etc., might be included in this group? If you don't know of them, they are about a vet's life in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1940's. The stories include life at Skeldale House (the home of the vet where Herriot begins his practice), the local pubs and their patrons, as well as the stories of the villagers and farmers whose animals Herriot cares for. Truly wonderful writing, and a marvelous way to get to the Yorkshires.

It's an ingenious system that uses natural resources and no energy, other than that of the people taking the water out of the tank, I suppose, unless it's somehow connected to hoses. I've often thought there should be a way in dry places like southern California to save the water that runs off all those paved surfaces, which must be many millions of gallons with every rainfall. Speaking of which, we are being blessed with a rain storm, the nicest Christmas present I can imagine.

KK, I like those authors, too. You might try Bruce Alexander. His series features the character Sir John Fielding, a blind magistrate and founder of the first police force in 1700s London, England.

Others are Rosemary Aubert, whose character is Ellis Portal, a former lawyer and judge convicted of a crime in Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Deanna Raybourn who writes of Lady Julia Grey, a young widow in 1880s London, England; Cynthia Riggs with her character Victoria Trumbull, an astute 92-year old Vineyard native and deputy police officer, in Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.

I can go on!

the best mystery website out there is stopyourkillingme.com

as far as authors-(I always recommend reading a series in order-the website has those lists by author and by main character!)

All three you named write historic literary mysteries, so that is what I am recommending here, author first:

Elizabeth Peters (the Amelia Peabody series)
Cassandra Clarke (Abbess Hildegarde)
Jacqueline Winspear (Maisie Dodds)
Priscilla Royal (Eleanor)
Tasha Alexander (Lady Emily)
P.C. Doherty 2 series:(Hugh Corbett) (Brother Altensan)
C.S. Harris (Sebastian St. Cyr)
David Roberts (Edward and Verity)
Todd Charles (Bess Crawford)
Kerry Greenwood (Phryne Fisher)
David Dickinson (Lord Francis Powerscourt)
Alan Bradley (Flavia)
Simon Beaufort (Sir Geoffery Mappestone)
Charles Finch (Charles Lenox)
Susanna Gregory (Matthew Bartholomew)
Kate Sedley (Roger the Chapman)
Michael Jecks (The Templar)

this is by far my favorite sub-genre! enjoy.
