This is going to be one of those movie adaptations that I will boycott. There was no reason to remake this. In fact, I plan to take out my copy of the series and watch it all over again (and yes, its a favorite book)

Have writers of screenplays really lost their imagination? Why do they keep messing with things that aren't broke, and come up with something original? I don't have as much trouble with adaptations as I do with remakes of movies that were classic (and yes I know Ive said before how much I enjoy twists on favorite books. For some reason this is different and I don't know why. I've never claimed to be consistent and thats probably a good thing :)

If it is coming to a theater, it is too short to do the book justice. Just like Keira Knightley's Pride and Prejudice was too short. One of the beauties of these books is their length and complexity.

Emma Thompson is playing Lady Marchmain so I'll see it. I look forward to the spin our 21st century values puts on this rather maddeningly moral book.

Cindy and cece, I agree with both your posts. Emma Thompson is outstanding, so I will probably see it anyway....

I expect I will see it - I am a sucker for these sort of movies and seeing as I just read the book a few months ago, so it's still fresh in my mind.

I do have a strong memory of the other set of actors doing the drama on BBC though. I wonder how the two will compare?

I enjoyed it only because, I suspect, I brought my love of the novel and the miniseries with me. The performances were outstanding, the cinematography fabulous, and the plot plodding and disjointed. This version emphasized the religious issues more than what I remember of the miniseries. They also never truly demonstrated Sebastian's charm. I fell in love with Sebastian myself the first time round. This time he threw up into Charles' ground floor window the first day of school and he went downhill from there. They also went a tad bit more into the physical relationship between Charles and Sebastian. My companions (from one of my book clubs, none of whom, oddly enough had ever read the novel) thought it good but not great.
