instructions for the game with Roman Numerals...

I read the game thread and it was so funny, and seems like great fun! But I wanted to make sure I understood it first before I post something (I could just see myself ruining the whole thing because I didnt get it).

I see that there is often one word that will be repeated in the next post, or something relating to that word. Get that.

The Autors name can sometimes be used for the next post.

But there were a few I didnt get. Do you sometimes have to have read (or know the plot) of the book mentioned to get the correlation between it and the next post? Let me give an example or two and you can tell me if thats right or not.

How bout if someone put down 'Red Badge or Courage'-Stephen Crane. Then could I maybe put 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz'- L. Frank Baum (as the Lion in it was looking for courage??)

Heres a better example to my question-

Currently the last post was by thyrkas who put 'Where Angels Fear to Tread'- by some author or another. Could I put 'Tess of the D'Urbervilles'??? As one of the main characters of the book was named Angel Clare??? or is that not really how it works?

CMK, the Game can be as easy or as difficult as you choose to make it.
So, for eg. Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane could be followed by 'red' something else, or a 'Crane' connection, either the machine or the bird, or as you suggest 'courage' but perhaps not everyone might 'get' the connection between 'courage' and the cowardly lion in 'W of Oz'. Same with Tess. Certainly you could use the 'Angel' connection, but again the link might be a bit remote for some players.
And, don't worry, it is impossible to make a mistake . . .except in the Roman numeral department should you start a new game. ;-)

If you use something that is not obvious, it is nice if you can add a short note explaining it - that way we can learn and have fun at the same time. Don't worry, no one keeps score (although I personally wouldn't attempt the Roman numerals).

I've made many, and have photos of none! But I have four tips. Cutting is crucial, because if the panels are not cut perfectly across the grain of the fabric, no matter what you do, the durn things will never hang properly. A big carpenter's square and a four-foot metal rule are the most helpful tools in the world for this. And I put a link below on how to square the panels. It's worth the extra step, because a carefully made Roman shade is a breeze to operate, and looks wonderful. Use a lining...you can mark all your spacing on the lining with a pale pencil mark, and nobody will ever see it. It also allows you to sew all the edges to the lining, which makes the hems all around virtually invisible. I don't use the tape with rings attached. Machine-sewn lines never hang as well, and the spacing of the rings locks you into its pleat size. I mark the ring placement on the lining using the ruler and square, and sew them on individually. One good old movie on TV, and they're done... Except for the top, and the channels for dowels that are attached to the lining (if you are using them), I do it all by hand...that means the side hems, the rings, and the bottom hems. My dining room table is my work table for this, and I set up my machine and my ironing board nearby. Once everything is cut and laid out, the hand-sewing is actually easier to do than machine stitching, and the whole business looks and hangs so much better for it. Dido, I think the last Game had an extra V in it. It should have read CXLVIII . . . and I never noticed despite seeing it every day. C=100 XL=40 VIII=8 So the next Game will be CXLIX . . .or something very similar Take it away Dido.

Yes, I agree. Roman numerals are a useful bit of knowledge to have in our brains. My seven-year-old has intro to geometry in first grade. I do not doubt their capacity to learn the advanced ideas, but I wonder what those students are not learning to make room for all of this more advanced material. And honestly Robert, I do not recall being unsettled in the least. So please do not tell me to settle down especially not with an exclamation point, thank you very much. PAM
