Happy Birthday Beatrix Potter

I noticed this morning that the Google logo featured Peter Rabbit and Mr. McGregor. Curious, I googled Ms. Potter and sure enough, July 28, 1866 is her birthday.

In my bookcase is a tattered and much read copy of Peter Rabbit, a relic of my son's babyhood. Sweet memories. Thank you, Beatrix. And happy birthday.

I, too, have saved my tiny B. Potter books from early childhood. They just fit on a small bookshelf with other "miniature" books. The latest "Victoria" magazine has a 2 page feature on Beatrix. Her work, and that of Tasha Tudor, will always be classics, IMO. Froniga, did you see the wonderful film: "Miss Potter"?

Speaking of Beatrix Potter, on our last visit to the library my kids and I found this wonderful book called Beatrix Potter The Complete Tales. It's 400 pages long with original illustrations. We've been enjoying it so much that I wanted to buy one, but they are a bit spendy--new $40, and the cheapest I could find a used one was for $20, plus shipping which wasn't cheap either. Even the used is out of our budget right now, but maybe for Christmas:-)

Okay, I'm glad we are finally getting rain, honestly I am. But I don't understand why it has to make up for the previouis 3 months in 2 days! It has not even slowed down...no break at all...since it started Sunday night. I'm having a heck of a time getting my dogs to go outside long enough to take care of business. Potter will go out in a sprinkle, but not a downpour. Maks freaks over either one. That's Florida for you...it's either drought or monsoon. Never any middle ground! I have company coming tomorrow, and a nursery hopping day was what we had in mind. If something doesn't happen, that will have to be cancelled. Yeah, I know I'm complaining, but I could use some MODERATION around here. Going directly from burning up to drowning is frustrating. (Some of my plants are now beaten down pretty badly, so those particular ones aren't laughing.) *mutter, mumble, grumble* Trying to keep in mind that everything looks greener, and the water table needs replenishing. But why, oh why, does it have to be all at once? Of course, the temperature has fallen 20 degrees, and I have the windows all open again. That's nice. But still.... Marcia (wishing for a couple of hours 3 times a week instead of a deluge...there's no making me happy, is there!)

Rowling brought Albus Dumbledore out of the closet at a question and answer session with fans of the books. A fan asked the question and she decided to answer it. It seems this is how the author imagined that character, but she never spelled it out in the stories. I have read all the books, some more than once, and this never occurred to me. I am listening to Book 7 on audio CD now and notice pointed references to a photo of him in his youth with arm around the shoulder of his best buddy, looking very happy. His brother complains, later in the book, about how when that friendship started Albus turned his back on family responsibilities, focusing only on working with his buddy to transform the wizarding world. Many of us who love the stories think of the characters as real people. In a real society there are differing orientations, so for it to be realistic I guess the Harry Potter stories would include that. The first book starts with Harry's eleventh birthday, a children's story in which including romance of any kind would not be appropriate. By the last book Harry is 18, and by this time there are some crushes and even kissing. Nothing more, which I think is best.

I have been guilty of the same thing I love pixel of ink. Plus I also have a ton of ebooks in epub format too. I have no idea how I will read them all. So many great free books I don't know why I would need to buy any.

Barbara Pym is a great favorite of mine - try Excellent Women. Her books are wonderful, and the characters are beautifully drawn and live very realistic lives without being raped and murdered. A fun YA novel that I discovered here at RP (thank you, whoever it was!) is Sorcery and Cecilia, or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot by Patricia Wrede and Caroline Stevermer. There are three books in the series, if you like the first one. I can't remember the quote exactly, nor who said it (an artist, I believe) but to paraphrase - why is it only valid or artistic to evoke negative emotions or feelings? Why isn't happiness just as important? Why, as an artist, does one have to defend oneself for making people smile? I have thought of this nearly every day since I heard it. Go ahead and read happy books, draw pretty bright colored flowers, and don't be afraid of being thought shallow if you want to, at least occasionally, leave the darkness behind.

The Peter Rabbit books are truly one of the treasures of childhood. And what a very interesting woman she was. I loved the movie of her life, tho they took many liberties with the facts. There are a number of biographies of Beatrix Potter and when I am finished with my current reading focus, I am going to read several and buy the best. Thanks for letting us know about the b-day--haven't opened Google yet.

I just started reading this to my little grandson, he's 3. I thought he might not be ready for 'longer' stories but he settled right in.

Kren- I have friends who spend $500.00 on designer purses, or other such frivolous things. I NEVER feel guilty about spending money on books. I can still read and enjoy books that are 10 years old, can anyone still wear a pair of 10 year old shoes?

I haven't seen the film, "Miss Potter," but will be on the lookout for it or at least a written bio since I know very little of Potter's life story.
Her works truly are classics and IMO, practically required read aloud material for the little ones.

Have you noticed some of the "modern" books for little kids these days? Call me old-fashioned but I fail to see the need for some of them.

I also bought The Complete Tales mentioned above. I loved reading it to my kids when they were younger.

I can only described the Miss Potter movie as enchanting -- the way her character was portrayed was different than I had expected -- very enjoyable though!

The DVD of the movie is only $14.99 on Amazon. It's made me obsessed with seeing the Lake District.
