As I put the garden to bed for the winter, I think about Murphy's law (or is it someone else's)? It decrees that the next people to occupy this space will not want to spend their time keeping it up and instead will have a lawn here. But some day, long after I'm gone, my daughter will say to my son, "Remember the vegetables and the beautiful flowers in Mom's garden"? A friend will visit her garden one day and ask where she got that lovely plant and Claudia will share the seeds - life will go on - and we have planted beauty.

I don't know if anyone bothers to read Ira Levin's Rosemary's Baby anymore. I read it one year right before Halloween, and it absolutely terrified me. Often as a special Halloween treat, I will read the M. R. James story "Oh, Whistle and I'll come for you my lad" every Halloween night, timing my reading so that I finish right before midnight. Never fails to spook me out. Susan Hill's The Lady in Black is also a good scare. I bought it on the recommendation of RPers, and it did not fail to give me goosebumps. A book which I think is really scary is J. Sheridan Le Fanu's Uncle Silas, though it does not strictly qualify as paranormal.

My Kindle has changed the way I spend my free time, and while some of it is used in reading, most of the time, I use it as a computer. While my husband is using our desktop, I use the Kindle to do almost anything I want , i.e., send and receive email, visit web sites, surf the 'net, etc., and read, too . As long as I have wifi, I'm good. Even my local car dealer has it available for folks getting their vehicles serviced. Still, nothing will ever replace turning the pages of a book!
