Tosh on the back of books

Hi all

We all pick up books and read the back of them, to see what it's all about. And what's written on the back can normally be divided into two classes. The first is the blurb, written by the publisher, to tell you what it's about. The second is the quotes from the reviews, which tell you what they thought of it.

What I'm interested in investigating here is not the blurb, but the amazingly ridiculous or pretentious statements that reviewers have come out with.

There are two that spring to mind. The first was on the back of A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters by Julian Barnes.

"At last the English Novel has got its balls back!"

The second is the book I'm reading at the moment - English Passengers by Matthew Kneale.

"Extraordinary....it has moral purpose and the power to change."

Any more?
