Books about mothers

Here in the US today is Mother's Day, at least it still is here on the west coast. For you easterners and Europeans the day is already past.

I found myself thinking of books that have explored that relationship. Some of us are mothers, some are not (some are even fathers), but we all have had a mother at some point, whether it was a good relationship or not. The book that came first to my mind was Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club. It explores the lives of several women who were born in China but emigrated to America, and their sometimes difficult relationships with their American-born daughters. I loved that book. The reader does not have to be an immigrant to understand the difficulty that even loving mothers and daughters sometimes have in relating to each other.

Any others to suggest?
