Volcanoes--books about them and us

What is going on with our planet these days? So many earthquakes and now this volcanic eruption in Iceland closing down air traffic in all of Great Britain and elsewhere as well.

The power of volcanoes has made for some gripping reading. A book I couldn't put down was "The Last Days of St. Pierre" by Ernest Zebrowski about the incredibly powerful and devastating eruption of Mount Pelee on Martinique in 1902. The title's reference to "The Last Days of Pompeii" was no doubt intentional.

Another interesting, if occasionally tedious, book is Simon Winchester's "Krakatoa, The Day the World Exploded". Maybe more than most readers want to know in the author's digressive style, but the basic story is truly compelling.

Any additions?
