Water for Elephants - the movie

Has anyone seen this yet? I liked much of the book but there were parts that disturbed me.

SPOILER ALERT

If you've seen the movie, I'm wondering about the mistreatment of the elephant. How graphic is that part of the movie?

Yes, I saw it, and I am sorry to report that it is rather graphic. That was the only part of the film I did not like.

Hannah, Yellowing between the veins of older leaves generally indicates a lack of a transportable nutrient, such as Magnesium. What is the analysis of the Plantacote? It could be that it is too slow releasing for the needs of the A. x calidora. These plants are very vigorous and that means they need enough nutrients to sustain that growth. Otherwise, they will decline and die down or out. I give my host of Alocasia hybrids a soluble fert solution every week and I use a higher nitrogen mix as well, occasionally supplementing with extra iron and manganese. Even under these conditions, some of mine get a little pale from time to time, especially in the summertime growing months. Many, if not most, of these Alocasia like well draining soil mix as well, so if your soil is heavy and wet, that might be part of the problem. Healthy roots are a must for proper nutrient uptake. Elephant Ear WATER question

I have had success planting elephant ears for the last few years. I've left them in the ground, except for the couple times I took some in containers into the garage and left them there for winter. I heavily mulched the ones in the ground over winter (about 8 inches of cedar mulch), with no watering in winter. They usually come back bigger the next year, although some have rotted. I'll be uncovering them in the next few days, and I'll "help" slough off some of the decayed tops, if there are some that have decayed. When I do this, they usually sprout new growth shortly thereafter. Some have grown to amazing size: as high as about 8 feet, with a base over 2 feet. Don't give up on the ones you planted, but remember that frost knocks them back, and they have to be mulched in winter. Let's hope you weren't too early. When they get going, I sprinkle bone meal around the area above the bulb a few times during summer, and it seems to keep them going strong. Good luck!

I just finished this book and I guess I'm in the minority because I loved it. And yes, Rosie was my favorite character too. I remember vividly two times when I have been able to actually touch elephants (or rather, they touched me). Once was at the Honolulu Zoo, where they are brought out into the open and visitors can feed them carrots. The other time was at the National Zoo in Washington D.C., during a horrendous blizzard when I was probably the only visitor at the entire zoo, and the all-female elephant keepers welcomed me into their midst. They let me into the enclosure and gave me some oranges to feed the elephants. I probably liked the book so much because my job involves caring for many elderly folks. I work in a medical rehab hospital, and I am often struck by the will to live and drive to recover from serious illness, even by those in their 90's. My younger co-workers are often puzzled by this; they seem to think that at a certain age, one just rolls over and dies. At their tender ages, they can't conceive of being so advanced in years and still finding life precious. I enjoyed the stories of working in a circus during the depression even though the brutality was difficult. I did find it quite realistic. All-in-all, a satisfying book, and one that I probably would not have read if not for RP.

I shall not be seeing the movie, as it would spoil my very special memories of the wonderful novel.

For me "Rosie" was the heroine.

"Rosie" was the heroine for me and my co-worker too.

*Spoiler alert*

I read the book first and told my co-worker she would enjoy it. As she read it we couldn't wait to talk to each other about it but were both afraid I might accidentally announce some "spoilers". Finally she came in one day and I knew she had finally finished the book when she said "Good old Rosie!"

I love elephants and collect figurines; I don't think I could watch the movie because of the mistreatment scenes that I recall from the book. I have a hard time with any mistreatment scenes of animals and people generally - if I don't know too much about it ahead of time, I seem to handle it OK but if I know that a story contains those types of things and have some detailed forewarning, I cannot bring myself to read it.

stoneangel - I also love elephants and have a small collection of figurines and pictures. I also have a wonderful oil painting that I have framed and hanging over my fireplace. I'll see if I can take a picture and post it. The elephant seems to have a smile on his/her face and the artist has painted the words: Je me contente de ma peau," which I'm told translates to something like -- I am happy in my skin. I love this painting.

I think we all like elephants, if you can take time to key in -elephants painting- you will see just how special they really are.

That sounds like a nice painting sarah canary; hope you can post it. I will see if I can post a picture I took at our local zoo - unfortunately the only way I have been able to see a live elephant. I watched a documentary when I was younger and was just struck by their humanity; they just seemed to feel things the same way we do - and it looks like they can paint as well!
