Name of film?

Can anyone help? There is an older film in which a young man from the present time discovers a letter in an old antique desk. A communication by letter, left in the desk, begins between him and a young lady who lived in a previous generation. Naturally a romance develops. Would appreciate any help in identifing this movie. TIA

No, it's not The Lake House"...that is a recent film ( insipid too!).

I think that it might be THE LOVE LETTER ( 1998).
A letter was found in the back of a drawer in an antique desk and the two people wrote back and forth through time by putting their letter into the drawer.

Gayle, now I know why I love you! LOL That I can think of, almost all of my favorites have already been listed. Here are some of the newer ones I didn't see anyone mention. Absolutely loved that movie. Eliza Ann, it's a shame I have only very recently seen Dr. Zhivago in its entirety. So glad I finally did! If you haven't seen Beckett, you have missed a great movie with Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton. When last I checked, Neither Netflix nor Blockbuster had it because it was never released on DVD, only VHS. If anyone is interested, I'd be happy to send you a copy. Just send me postage.

Dublin, I have seen Mrs. Miniver, but I cannot remember the roses named. Here, however, are two roses mentioned by name in films that I do remember: From The Second Woman (1950) there is Matador, which is probably the 1935 hybrid tea, which seems to have disappeared without a trace. This rose may even be present in the movie, but it is hard to tell. And from Juliet of the Spirits (1965) there is the presumably fictitious Rosa aurata, represented by a real rose, but one which I cannot name. Larry

Hemerocallis 'Pinochle Punch' (named by my wife): A couple of years ago I was at Hornbaker Gardens in Princeton, Illinois which is a retail garden center that specializes in daylilies. I bought a field clump of a peach daylily with a ruffled edge which was a chance seedling from the daylily gardens of breeder Bob Ellison in nearby Rockford. I took home the clump and told my wife it was a chance seedling that might never be named and that in our yard she could call it what she wished. I also told her that if the name she chose sounded good I would forward it to Hornbaker's. The next day she said it reminded her exactly of the color of punch her mom made for pinochle club back in the day, hence Pinochle Punch. I forwarded the backstory to Hornbaker;s and they are using it as an unregistered garden name only. Needless to say my spouse was thrilled. And while it's not a registered cultivar you can now look up Pinochle Punch online. Here it is in it's first year of bloom.

Oh, now I liked Lake House! Yeah, there were holes in it. But it was one of those movies that I really enjoyed watching (and considering I don't like Sandra Bullock, thats saying something)

Love Letter sounds like one I'd love to see. We found some papers (not a letter) when we bought a antique secretary. We still have them, and now and then I wonder who would have put them there and who owned it.

I remember watching "The Love Letter". It was a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie. You can probably find it for sale in Hallmark stores, or order it online from their website.

You're right..it was "The Love Letter." Thanks for all the help. I don't think it's available on DVD as yet, but can be found on VHS. Hope to find a copy again.

madcity, that film has been on UK TV several times, set in the time of the Civil War (the American one!). Quite well done.
Where have you been? I used to enjoy vying with you on 'The Game'!

Veer, did you choose a colour or was it left-over paint? Are you trying to impress the chooks?
Grelobe, I never have an overwhelming wish to work but work sort of sneaks up on me sometimes.
My favourite saying about housework is "Dust is a noun, not a verb"!
Back to the topic. There have been quite a number of films on this type of subject, as I recall. It is a fascinating idea that communication and love can jump the time-barrier.

Universes collide!!

After responding to this question recently, I was browsing the tv late last night and found THE LOVE LETTER!!
It was the other movie by the same name which starred Kate Capshaw and Ellen Degeneres ( made quite a few years back).
What a delightful film it was and very enjoyable to watch again!

But.....isn't it a weird coincidence that after thinking about that movie title I would stumble upon it one dark night!? I haven't seen or thought about either movie in probably 15 years!

Or....( spooky musical interlude here ) are there really no coincidences. (make your own inferences here! ).

Where is Einstein when I need him!
