Knee pads

Hi all

My Mum is going to buy me a pair of knee pads for Christmas, I've wanted some for ages so I'm really pleased. Does anyone have any recommendations? I have been looking on the net and their are SO many to choose from! Solid types, gel-filled, neoprene, all sorts.

Any advice from people have have used knee pads would be greatly appreciated.

I bought some really cheap ones from Wilkinson's about four years ago. They do up with elasticated velcro straps. They have been brilliant. They never come undone, however much grubbing around I do, and they protect my knees very well from sharp bits of bark etc. They cost me 99p or 1.99, can't quite remember which, and I'm only now thinking of replacing them.

Wow, I'm impressed with the cheapness of your knee pads - I was looking at really dear ones and worried that they might not be any good, and look at yours - that's brilliant! I was looking at a site, tooled-up.com, where they had these really mega ones with gel-filled parts - I want to make sure what ever I end up is nice and waterproof.

George, I am glad I am in such good company. I got my raking blister on Tuesday at my Aunt's house [sorry, Marda] during a visit that got all mixed up and didn't extend past 4 hours. My aunt forgot I was coming, and Monday she got in the mood to drive 2 hours in a farther away direction to see her brother. I thought she had gone to the store so I raked her leaves while I waited for her to get home. Her neighbor who had driven past 3 times thought it was very nice of me to travel 2 hours JUST to rake her leaves! So after 4 hours of raking and dark approaching and a bit of panic setting in for me, the neighbor asked me where I'd be spending the night since Auntie was away! And my knees and lower back are aching from doing kitchen tile. Wow is right! He has almost DOUBLED his weight in a month! Go CJ go! I still have a (rather well worn!) pair of Lee Valley Tools gardener's pants with the pockets for knee pads. Taking the pads out when washing the pants became a bit of a PITA, plus pads add cushioning but not too much support. So I started wearing Trainer's Choice knee supports under the pants. The supports wouldn't stay put on my legs so I went to a sporting-goods store and bought one of those garter belts used with hockey gear and attached the knee supports to that. That works great and I can wear them under any pants so I no longer need the special gardener's pants.

Don't go for the ones with holes in for the straps. They also let water through.

Aha, interesting point. I have been wondering about waterproofness; I saw some really good looking gel ones on the net but the gel area looked a bit small, and there is no way of knowing if the surrounding areas are waterproof. They were for floor-laying!

Holes for the straps. I will look out for that.
