Thuja Smargard

Hello. I planted 10 Thuja Smargards (Emeralds) 10 months ago and a few of them are looking poorly. Some of the smaller branches are turning red and falling off. Is this natural (Autumn effect) or are they lacking water? I try to water at least once a week and the soil is not the best. Any help would be appreciated as I would like to see them survive.

If they were stored in protected nursery rows, one plant can shade the side of another.

Occassionally, when removed from rows and put in yards, they can get a bit of sunburn to foliage that was previously shaded.

Not sure if its your issue, but that is a common occurance.

If you are only loosing a bit of foliage, don't worry too much if it's isolated and not spreading.

I've seen the same thing Dave mentioned. In fact the majority had "some" green by the end of fall. Most are completely brown now. All they needed was some water but if I had a penny every time I saw a homeowner watering established plants I wouldn't have a single penny. These are just two homes that are within view of inside my house. Another good reason not to plant a row of the same plant single file like this. Its a shame the ones in the first pic died to cover that view of the hideous out building. I'll just have to wait for plants. You can see the leader peaking up...so not to far away!

Trees don't stop growing at a certain height, so you are probably looking for something that can tolerate sheering as well. I would recommend Thuja occidentalis 'Yellow Ribbon' if you want something a little different, but still flexible for the spot.

I don't know about a nutrient spray, but I have heard that some evergreens benefit from an anti-dessicant spray which helps the plant retain moisture during the winter...? See link for an article about spraying "living Christmas trees" which mentions two anti-dessicants by name in the last line. The deal with the material is that grafting nootka requires (or so a friend tells me) 2-year old hardwood. In your photo I see one year old hardwood, but that is all. The other half of the story is that nootka can be rooted but I only know one European that propagates them this way. Here in the USA they're grafted. If you're on facebook and are a member or sign up to be a member of Planet Conifer, Edwin Smits is on that group and he's the one who roots them if you want to ask how and when. When a new species of Cupressus was found in Vietnam: Cupressus vietnamensis.... Chamaecyarpis nootkatensis was moved to Cupressus. Not everyone accepts this change over to the Genus Cupressus, however I do & the morphology of Nootka is a closer fit within Cupressus than Chamaecyparis. Dax
