Chocolate cosmos - propagation

How can I ensure that a chocolate cosmos gets through the winter?

I understand that they need protection or digging up.

Can I take cuttings now or should I have done so earlier in the year? Do they root easily?

How about root cuttings?

What about seed? I'm keen to try this if it will work. I don't think I've ever seen seed for sale, but maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. Is it easy to germinate?

HI Choc cosmos is best overwintered with protection from frost. allow stems to die down and keep soil and tuber on the dry side and above freezing. in the spring as the warmer weather arrives small shoots will emerge from the base.these may be severed with a razor blade near the base just below a node be carefull not to damage the tender growth dip the base in rooting hormone and put in a well drained sterile medium water well and put on bottom heat keep covered to allow light but not direct sunlight these should root in two weeks or so

There's a couple of ways you can do this :-) Do you grow dahlias? If so, just harvest and store the tubers the same way you would a dahlia tuber.......wait until a light frost knocks back the foliage, dig up the tuber and rinse off the soil, allow to dry slightly and wrap in newspaper and store in a cool, dry location for the winter (like your basement?). Or, if you grow in a container, just bring the container into frost-free storage for the winter. No water.

I was yakking with the lady at the botanic garden who was planting upmteen flats of those. She said that it does set seed, but only 5% are likely to germinate. The flats had been grown from seed. Im sure they have reliable sources for the seeds that we prolly dont have access too. I forgot that that kind has tubers, I coulda shoulda coulda asked her about that. Its not everyday you get a chance like that. :)
