You could try using Superthrive when you water. I water my seedling with a watering can 'most' of the time. When I'm feeling lazy I use the mist setting on my hose and mist the soil. Anyway, you could add Superthrive to the water in the can or attach a hose end sprayer and feed them that way. There are alot of gardenweb members who swear by Superthrive. When I used it I didn't see much difference, but maybe I just didn't give it enough time - I only watered with it a couple times very early in the growing season. You can find it at Walmart.

Mike do you think the red trumpet might be a Bignonia Capriolata? Take a look at this. I have one but it's not in bloom right now. If it is a Cross Vine it's very manageable and nothing like the evil trumpet vine Campsis radicans. That and cockroaches would be the only things to survive a nuclear explosion! lol BTW I love the runner bean too. Here is a link that might be useful:

Hee Hee Granny! It is such a slow, tedious cold wet Spring- oh excuse me SUMMER, that I am yelling at everything I can see. By now, I have forgotten which tuber had the bulbous purply/white growth, but if I find it, I'm yelling at it. To date, no little men in white coats have driven up with a paddy wagon. And when I read about how hot and humid everyone is, scorching in the searing temps I yell at the computer too! We have a chance to crack 60 here today- whoo hoo. When I read about buds or blooms already showing up, I throw viscious hisses toward the computer monitor and there's no telling what will happen when one of you dahlia enthusiasts posts a photo. It could be the last straw... I have dug up and tried to save about 15 slacking/rotting tubers so far- I quit counting, it's too depressing. About half of those have since died and a mystifying number of them were yellows! Yellows of every shape and size. Hiss. At one point I was going to swear off dahlias ever again and grow peas and beans like normal people. But I got over it : ) because hope springs eternal.

I have grown runner beans as perenniels. In mild Seattle winters, runner bean tubers will survive all winter in the ground in the garden. In other areas, people sometimes dig them up and store them for the winter. Some people say that this produces an earier crop and others report that they get earlier crops from seed-sown plants. In your situation, I am wondering if the plant will have a chance to make a tuber before the top dies and the plant goes dormant for the winter. Or, if you try to keep the vine going all winter and into next summer, will it insist on going dormant at some point? So the question is, how long will a runner bean vine grow before it dies and the plant goes dormant? One nice thing about runner beans is that they can be sown in the spring when the nights are 40F. A bit different from common beans!
