Hollyhock Identification

I've seen a beautiful Hollyhock in a garden having lovely flowers like a large Hibiscus. The leaves, however, are not the normal Hollyhock-type, but sort of 3-lobed.

The Hollyhock in question has the colouring of the lower picture, but the leaves are like the top photo.

Anyone know what type this is?

Its hard to say as there are a number of Alcea (Hollyhock) types. We grow just one type where I work and the leaf is very veriable. It COULD be a form of Fig leaf hollyhock Alcea Ficifolia which we tend to like ourselves as it seems less prone to hollyhock rust however if this is a true name for the type it is unclear- some consider such a name to be used to describe a number of forms.

Thanks for the input. I'll have to get a photo of it and, more importantly, some seeds. The plant is situated in a front garden, in a house with 3 flats.

Hi Pat! It sounds like your canna could be called 'Intrigue'. There are a couple out there that are similar like 'Constitution', but those flowers are larger and pinker. I love Intrigue because aside from the fantastic coloring, the leaves are narrower and more upright than a typical canna, almost like a tropical grass. Based on what you've posted, the first one does look like winged sumac. Second looks like it could be Mulberry weed. It would have tiny flowers in the leaf axils along the stem. Third one looks like black cherry. Fourth one is non-native aggressive shrub called Elaeagnus. Fifth one looks like a hollyhock seedling.

If you do have leaf miners once hte eggs have been layed inside the leaf or the larva have hatched and are tunneling through the leaf there is nothing you can do except squish the larva between two fingers. There is a wasp that parasitizes these larva and there is a wasp that will grab and eat ma fly that lays the eggs, but until the larva matures and drops out of the leaf nothing you can get, inject, spray, or apply to the leaf surface will touch that larva.

I also agree that they are the mallow family. There are more than 3,000 plants in the family - with most seeds and pod looking similar. Here is one of the best online sites and this link will take you to the Alcea page - the family of Mallows. Seed identification using the seeds only can be daunting, nerdy but really interesting and each one is beautiful.
