They are probably “thrips” in the adult flying stage. They need moisture, but I’ve still got a problem with them even here in the desert, since they get moisture near my plants. You probably have them in larvae form too. I thought I had a ton of teeny tiny ants in my backyard and under the dog’s water bowl indoors. The larvae are literally only 1mm, so they look like dust until they move. I captured one yesterday in a 7x high resolution handheld microscope setup and was surprised that my “ant” was actually a neon green and black beetle. Here is the damage they cause- they suck nutrients from leaves, and their spit gets into the leaf leaving small yellow or white circles. They can cause a lot of damage pretty quickly. I do not know how to get rid of them safely at this point. Hopefully someone can help out in that department.

My pond is on the edge of my woodlands. I have a lot of birds here. They come to bathe in the 30 ft. stream that flows down the hill into the pond. (My favorites are the cardinals and the gold finches) And I have 2 frogs that jump in as soon as I approach the pond. I'll look up mayflies online - even though they're small - they're too big to be gnats. Why do I want to get rid of them? They're annoying and occasionally I get bit.

I can't find the post (sorry!), but someone in (north?) central FL recently commented (to make a point about global warming?) on the many bugs that collect on one's car. I realized that I this is not occurring on my car, here on the Pinellas peninsula, and figured I would have to drive inland for that pleasure. Then, in the June 6 Tampa Bay Times "Car talk" by Ray Magliozzi, I learned that as cars in the last two decades have become more aerodynamic to increase gas mileage, an additional result is "fewer squashed bugs and decreased sales of bug-and-tar remover". What d'ya think?

There would be people at the other websites that could ID your fly to the family or with luck the genus. And close-ups are desirable to ID insects lacking bold, colorful, or unique features. You might run into someone there that just happens to be familiar with that particular fly. The posted images will do.
