Curled leaves on Kilmarnock Weeping Willow

In May we planted 3 Kilmarnock weeping willows in 3 large tubs on our patio. They are about 5ft high. Until recently, they have been growing well, but the last couple of weeks the leaves have curled up and look very dry. Obviously, the weather here (SW UK) has been very hot the last week or so, but is this the cause? I am now generally watering them in the morning before work, and in the evening using around 7lites of water between them at each watering. Is that enough or too much? Could the curling leaves be a sympton of poor drainage - I did drill a few holes in the tubs and covered with broken pots so not to clog up. Any advice is most welcome!
