Olga (or anyone else with experience with this rose for that matter), would you recommend R. primula for a foundation planting (where one could use a 6-8' tall shrub)? Is R. primula's shrub form sufficiently beautiful for it to work as a foundation shrub? Is the shrub's architecture vase-shaped, or more "brambly" (the way R. eglanteria is clearly a bramble)? (The townhouse it would be planted next to has an exposed 4' high concrete basement wall and for two stories above that is covered in wood siding painted brick red (not a particularly orange brick red either; more brown-red).) The rose would get sun from mid-late morning through most of the afternoon (being shaded by an adjacent lilac in the early & mid morning).

Eewww... I've never been a fan of dates. On another note, I believe I have that plant. If only I could remember what it's called... Wait, wait, don't tell me... *checking my labels* Hmm. I put my plant in a container with several others, so I'm IDing by process of elimination. I think mine is a Sedeveria "Harry Butterfield" (it's the only tag in my collection that makes sense). Is that what you've got there, Cali888888888888? The leaves look right, but yours is growing upright (and I'm presuming you've pruned the "trunk") - all the images I'm finding online show it cascading. *CG*

Yes Marguerite, it looked like hoya to me at first too, but the flower is so different. I don't have any, but looked them up when I saw photos posted on another forum. I like those unusual flowers a lot. Rina

For many different reasons, some ppl grow them indoors year-round even if they have outdoor space available. One of the members here, Christopher, grows fantastic looking jades indoors while he could keep them outside. Oksana does too - and she is in Siberia. There are many others I can't think of in a hurry - I think some may post with their experience and reasons. If you can supply really good amount of sunlight, it could work. I am in colder zone than you and don't have enough window space to keep them indoors and also believe that they really benefit from outdoors - JMO. I take all my indoors plants (succulents and non-succulents) outdoors as soon as it is warm enough - I do it when night time temps stay reliable around 50F. Some succulents can take little lower temps, but I try to do it more-or-less all at the same time. Too much rain could be a problem, so I have a 'contraption' to protect them from heavy rain: sheet of plastic stapled to top 'rail' above the shelves, that I can drop down if heavy rain. I don't do it every time it rains, but if too heavy and/or too long, I do. There is no sides, so wind blows thru, plants don't suffocate or cook. It is actually pretty loose. Greenhouse would be ideal...BUT... If you pot your plants in very well draining mix, they can take more rain since it will drain much better than potting soil. Hens and chicks (sempervivums) should be left outdoors, they are very hardy and don't grow very well indoors. Rina
