Risen from the compost heap?

I often feel that to fall into my hands is the kiss of death for many a plant but how's this for tenacity.

A few weeks ago I found an old stump of a potted plant whilst clearing the compost bin. I noticed that there were some vigorous-looking roots threaded through it, so, ever curious, I potted it up to see what would happen. It transpires that it is a brugmansia which was killed off (I thought) by a sharp frost in November 2005. I chucked it in the compost bin last Spring as there was no sign of life.

How did it manage to survive a whole growing season and a winter covered by a pile of rotting veg and with no light?
